Soliton Propagation in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Abstract

We investigate the propagation of nonlinear pulses in a magnetically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. The condensate may take an elongated shape just like a “cigar”, because of high asymmetry of the harmonic trap. By applying the reductive perturbation method to model equations, we derive the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and show a formula for the dependence of the pulse speed on its amplitude.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in cigar-shaped traps

A. M. Kamchatnov, V. S. Shchesnovich

The Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an elongated cigar-shaped trap is reduced to an effective system of nonlinear equations depending on only one space coordinate along the trap axis. The radial distribution of the condensate density and its radial velocity are approximated by Gaussian functions with real and imaginary exponents, respectively, with parameters depending on the axial coordinate and time. The effective one-dimensional system is applied to a description of the ground state of the condensate, to dark and bright solitons, to the sound and radial compression waves propagating in a dense condensate, and to weakly nonlinear waves in repulsive condensate. In the low-density limit our results reproduce the known formulas. In the high-density case our description of solitons goes beyond the standard approach based on the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. The dispersion relations for the sound and radial compression waves are obtained in a wide region of values of the condensate density. The Korteweg--de Vries equation for weakly nonlinear waves is derived and the existence of bright solitons on a constant background is predicted for a dense enough condensate with a repulsive interaction between the atoms.

Korteweg-de Vries Description of Dark Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates

Guoxiang Huang

We investigate the dynamics of pulses in a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive atom-atom interactions without using Thomas-Fermi approximation. In the linear level our results give the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum for sound propagation with speed c = c 0 /(2) 1/2 , where c 0 is the speed for the case without a trap. We develop a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) description for dark soliton propagation in the system and show that it is the quantum pressure that contributes the dispersion necessary for the formation of the dark solitons.

Dark solitons and their head-on collisions in Bose-Einstein condensates

Guoxiang Huang, Manuel G. Velárde, Valeri A. Makarov

The evolution and collision of dark solitary waves (solitons) appearing in cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive atom-atom interaction are here considered using a Boussinesq-Korteweg--de Vries description. We provide theoretical predictions and computer experiment evidence about their phase shifts or change of trajectories, in the space-time plot, corresponding upon collisions. Details are also given about a suggested experiment that could assess their genuine solitonic nature.

Stability of Bright Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensate

Muhammad Irfan Qadir, Aleen Ijaz

We consider a system of effectively one dimensional cigar shaped Bose Einstein condensate. We present a numerical study for the existence and stability of travelling bright solitons in the time dependent nonlinear Schrodinger equation that describes the dynamics of Bose-Einstein ¨ condensate. Furthermore, the effects of strength of the trap on the stability of bright solitons are investigated when the condensate is placed under the influence of a trapping potential.

Shock Waves in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

Igor K. Kulikov, Michail A. Zak

A paper presents a theoretical study of shock waves in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The mathematical model of the BEC in this study is a nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) in which (1) the role of the wave function of a single particle in the traditional Schroedinger equation is played by a space- and time-dependent complex order parameter (x,t) proportional to the square root of the density of atoms and (2) the atoms engage in a repulsive interaction characterized by a potential proportional to | (x,t)|2. Equations that describe macroscopic perturbations of the BEC at zero temperature are derived from the NLSE and simplifying assumptions are made, leading to equations for the propagation of sound waves and the transformation of sound waves into shock waves. Equations for the speeds of shock waves and the relationships between jumps of velocity and density across shock fronts are derived. Similarities and differences between this theory and the classical theory of sound waves and shocks in ordinary gases are noted. The present theory is illustrated by solving the equations for the example of a shock wave propagating in a cigar-shaped BEC.

The nonlinear evolution of ring dark solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates

Ju-Kui Xue

The dynamics of the ring dark soliton in a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) with thin disc-shaped potential is investigated analytically and numerically. Analytical investigation shows that the ring dark soliton in the radial non-symmetric cylindrical BEC is governed by a cylindrical Kadomtsev–Petviashvili equation, while the ring dark soliton in the radial symmetric cylindrical BEC is governed by a cylindrical Korteweg–de Vries equation. The reduction to the cylindrical KP or KdV equation may be useful to understand the dynamics of a ring dark soliton. The numerical results show that the evolution properties and the snaking of a ring dark soliton are modified significantly by the trapping.
