The nonlinear evolution of ring dark solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates

Abstract

The dynamics of the ring dark soliton in a Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) with thin disc-shaped potential is investigated analytically and numerically. Analytical investigation shows that the ring dark soliton in the radial non-symmetric cylindrical BEC is governed by a cylindrical Kadomtsev–Petviashvili equation, while the ring dark soliton in the radial symmetric cylindrical BEC is governed by a cylindrical Korteweg–de Vries equation. The reduction to the cylindrical KP or KdV equation may be useful to understand the dynamics of a ring dark soliton. The numerical results show that the evolution properties and the snaking of a ring dark soliton are modified significantly by the trapping.

Head-on collision of ring dark solitons in Bose–Einstein condensates

Xue Ju-Kui, Peng Ping

The ring dark solitons and their head-on collisions in a Bose–Einstein condensates with thin disc-shaped potential are studied. It is shown that the system admits a solution with two concentric ring solitons, one moving inwards and the other moving outwards, which in small-amplitude limit, are described by the two cylindrical KdV equations in the respective reference frames. By using the extended Poincare–Lighthill–Kuo perturbation method, the analytical phase shifts following the head-on collisions between two ring dark solitary waves are derived. It is shown that the phase shifts decrease with the radial coordinate r according to the r−1/3 law and depend on the initial soliton amplitude and radius.

Generating ring dark solitons in an evolving Bose-Einstein condensate

Shi-Jie Yang, Quansheng Wu, Shengnan Zhang +4 more

The successive dynamical evolution of a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a cylindrical well is numerically studied in the framework of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Interference in the nonlinear matter wave leads to concentric density rings. The phase distribution exhibits a discontinuous sequence of plateaulike belts. Abrupt jumps in the phase between adjacent belts imply large radial superfluid velocity at the borderline. This, however, does not mean large particle current because the corresponding superfluid density is nearly zero. The density zeros along with the large gradient are identified as ring dark solitons, which have a brief lifetime before evolving into other soliton states.

Weak nonlinear matter waves in a trapped two-component Bose–Einstein condensates

Yong Wen-Mei, Ju-Kui Xue

The dynamics of the weak nonlinear matter solitary waves in two-component Bose–Einstein condensates (BEC) with cigar-shaped external potential are investigated analytically by a perturbation method. In the small amplitude limit, the two-components can be decoupled and the dynamics of solitary waves are governed by a variable-coefficient Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation. The reduction to the KdV equation may be useful to understand the dynamics of nonlinear matter waves in two-component BEC. The analytical expressions for the evolution of soliton, emitted radiation profiles and soliton oscillation frequency are also obtained.

Dynamics of ring solitons in an expanding cloud of a Bose-Einstein condensate

A. M. Kamchatnov, Bulat Irekovich Suleimanov, E. N. Tsoy

In this paper, we derive equations for the dynamics of ring dark solitons in an expanding cloud of a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. Assuming that the soliton's width is much smaller than its radius, we obtain the Hamilton equations for its evolution. Then they are transformed into the Newton equation, which is more convenient for applications. The general theory is illustrated by the solution of the Newton equation for the case of the axially symmetric condensate cloud, which expands after switching off a harmonic trap. The validity of our approximate analytical approach is confirmed by comparison with the results of numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Ring dark solitons in three-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates

Wenlong Wang, P. G. Kevrekidis, Egor S. Babaev

In this work we present a systematic study of the three-dimensional extension of the ring dark soliton, examining its existence, stability, and dynamics in isotropic harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates. Detuning the chemical potential from the linear limit, the ring dark soliton becomes unstable immediately but can be fully stabilized by an external cylindrical potential. The ring has a large number of unstable modes which are analyzed through spectral stability analysis. Furthermore, a few typical destabilization dynamical scenarios are revealed with a number of interesting vortical structures emerging, such as the two or four coaxial parallel vortex rings. In the process of considering the stability of the structure, we also develop a modified version of the degenerate perturbation theory method for characterizing the spectra of the coherent structure. This semianalytical method can be reliably applied to any soliton with a linear limit to explore its spectral properties near this limit. The good agreement of the resulting spectrum is illustrated via a comparison with the full numerical Bogolyubov--de Gennes spectrum. The application of the method to the two-component ring dark-bright soliton is also discussed.

Dynamics of ring dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Hui Guo, Yajun Wang, Lin-Xue Wang +1 more

Soliton is an exotic topological excitation, and it widely exists in various nonlinear systems, such as nonlinear optics, Bose-Einstein condensates, classical and quantum fluids, plasma, magnetic materials, etc. A stable soliton can propagate with constant amplitude and velocity, and maintain its shape. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional solitons are usually hard to stabilize, and how to realize stable two-dimensional or three-dimensional solitons has aroused the great interest of the researchers. Ring dark soliton is a kind of two-dimensional soliton, which was first theoretically predicted and experimentally realized in nonlinear optical systems. Compared with the usual two-dimensional solitons, ring dark solitons have good stability and rich dynamical behaviors. Owing to their highly controllable capability, Bose-Einstein condensates provide a new platform for studying the ring dark solitons. Based on the recent progress in Bose-Einstein condensates and solitons, this paper reviews the research on the analytic solutions, stability, as well as the decay dynamics of ring dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates. A transform method is introduced, which generalizes the analytic solutions of ring dark solitons from a homogeneous system with time-independent nonlinearity to a harmonically trapped inhomogeneous system with time-dependent nonlinearity. The stability phase diagram of the ring dark soliton under deformation perturbations is discussed by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equations in the mean-field theory. A method of enhancing the stability of ring dark solitons by periodically modulating the nonlinear coefficients is introduced. It is also shown that the periodically modulated nonlinear coefficient can be experimentally realized by the Feshbach resonance technology. In addition, we discuss the dynamics of the decay of ring dark solitons. It is found that the ring dark soliton can decay into various vortex clusters composed of vortices and antivortices. This opens a new avenue to the investigation of vortex dynamics and quantum turbulence. It is also found that the ring dark solitons combined with periodic modulated nonlinearity can give rise to the pattern formation, which is an interesting nonlinear phenomenon widely explored in all the fields of nature. Finally, some possible research subjects about ring dark solitons in future research are also discussed.
