Abstract

A time-dependent Kohn-Sham theory is presented for obtaining the time-dependent density which has a periodic dependence on time. A set of coupled single-particle equations $\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{2}{\ensuremath{\nabla}}^{2}{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{i}+{v}_{\mathrm{eff}}{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{i}={\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{i}{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{i}$ and $\frac{\ensuremath{\partial}{\ensuremath{\chi}}_{i}^{2}}{\ensuremath{\partial}t}+\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\nabla}}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}({\ensuremath{\chi}}_{i}^{2}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\ensuremath{\nabla}}{S}_{i})=0$ are obtained. The ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{i}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}},t)$ and ${S}_{i}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}},t)$ are the phase and amplitude, respectively, of the time-dependent Kohn-Sham orbitals, ${v}_{\mathrm{eff}}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}},t)$ is the time-dependent Kohn-Sham effective potential, and ${\ensuremath{\epsilon}}_{i}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}},t)=\ensuremath{-}\frac{\ensuremath{\partial}{S}_{i}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}},t)}{\ensuremath{\partial}t}$. The density $\ensuremath{\rho}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}},t)$ is equal to the sum of the squares of the ${\ensuremath{\chi}}_{i}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}},t)$.

Density-Functional Theory for Time-Dependent Systems

Erich Runge, Eberhard K. U. Gross

A density-functional formalism comparable to the Hohenberg-Kohn-Sham theory of the ground state is developed for arbitrary time-dependent systems. It is proven that the single-particle potential $v(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}}t)$ leading to a given $v$-representable density $n(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{r}}t)$ is uniquely determined so that the corresponding map $v\ensuremath{\rightarrow}n$ is invertible. On the basis of this theorem, three schemes are derived to calculate the density: a set of hydrodynamical equations, a stationary action principle, and an effective single-particle Schr\"odinger equation.

Time-dependent Kohn-Sham formalism

Andreas Görling

Within density-functional theory a time-dependent perturbation theory is derived that yields exact orbital-dependent expressions for the time-dependent exchange-correlation potential in the form of a perturbation series. This leads to an exact time-dependent Kohn-Sham scheme based on perturbation theory. In first order an ``exchange-only'' Kohn-Sham procedure is obtained, that is a generalization of a recently presented time-dependent optimized potential method. The exact, in higher order, but quite complicated expressions for the exchange-correlation potential may serve as a starting point for the construction of approximate exchange-correlation potentials. An adiabatic connection or coupling constant path between a time-dependent physical system and its corresponding Kohn-Sham system is introduced.

Time-dependent potential through an Ansatz for the Kohn-Sham orbitals

Rudolph J Magyar

Given the time-evolution of an electron charge density, the local potential in Kohn-Sham time-dependent density functional theory (KS-TDDFT) can be modeled as a sum of instantaneous and dynamic contributions by assuming a certain form of the time-dependent Kohn-Sham (TD-KS) orbitals. The instantaneous part is obtained numerically using methods from ground-state density functional theory (DFT) and the dynamic part is expressed in terms of a velocity potential that depends on the electron current density. The suggested form of the TD-KS orbitals satisfies several known constraints (orthonormality, N-representability, J-representability), and the domain of validity is shown to depend on the evolution of the instantaneous quantities. Through this decomposition, we can relate time-dependent and ground -state V-representability. The resulting potentials are shown numerically to approximate the exact time-dependent Kohn-Sham potentials for a set of 3 non-singlet two-particle systems (a Kohn-mode, a Coulomb explosion, and a double quantum well) where the exact solutions and reference densities are known or obtained through configuration interaction (CI) approaches.

Inverse Kohn–Sham Equations Derived from the Density Equation Theory

T. Kato, Katsuyuki Nobusada, Shinji Saito

We formulate the inverse Kohn–Sham equations based on the density equation theory. The present formulation relies on neither action functionals nor force balance equation, but is constructed by comparing the first-order density equation for the electron interacting real system and that for the electron non-interacting Kohn–Sham system. The derived inverse Kohn–Sham integral equation requires information of an exact ground-state electron density to calculate an exact Kohn–Sham potential for a ground state and it requires an exact time-dependent electron density and a time-derivative of the exact time-dependent first-order density matrix to calculate an exact time-dependent Kohn–Sham potential. A possible algorithm to construct the Kohn–Sham potential for a ground state is suggested as well as a solution algorithm for the time-dependent inverse Kohn–Sham problem without resorting to any approximations. These two solution algorithms, in combination, suggest a way to perform an exact time-dependent density functional calculation as a predictive method.

Construction of a Kohn-Sham Iteration Scheme in Time-Dependent Lattice Density-Functional Theory

B.-S. Mehmel

In the present thesis, a rigorous mathematical formulation of time-dependent density-functional theory for lattice systems is derived, serving a formally exact approach towards solving time-dependent many-particle Schrödinger problems. After introducing the necessary mathematical foundations, a one-to-one mapping from external potentials onto electronic densities obtained by solving the Schrödinger equation is introduced. Its properties and the related Banach spaces of scalar potentials and electronic densities are discussed in detail. It allows to precisely formulate the Kohn-Sham Iteration scheme, mapping a given many-particle to an effective single-particle Schrödinger problem, both generating the exact same density. Employing the Banach fixed point theorem, the Kohn-Sham Iteration scheme is proven to be convergent depending on the chosen initial density.

On the Kohn-Sham Approach to Time-Dependent Problems in a Density-Functional Framework

Walter Tarantino

Predictivity of the Kohn-Sham approach to dynamical problems, when regarded as an initial value problem in a time-dependent density functional framework, is analysed for a class of models for which the argument devised in the work of Maitra et al. (Phys. Rev. A 78, 056501 (2008), arXiv:cond-mat/0710.0018) for the standard electronic many-body problem does not apply. The original argument is here extended and revised. As a result, predictivity for this class of problems seems possible only at the price of introducing extra unknown functionals in the corresponding Kohn-Sham equation. Furthermore, the same argument, when applied to original electronic problem, suggests that the Hartree-exchange-correlation potential is not unambiguously identified by the contemporary and past densities and initial states, but also requires knowledge of the divergence of the contemporary Kohn-Sham current.
