Time-dependent Kohn-Sham formalism

Abstract

Within density-functional theory a time-dependent perturbation theory is derived that yields exact orbital-dependent expressions for the time-dependent exchange-correlation potential in the form of a perturbation series. This leads to an exact time-dependent Kohn-Sham scheme based on perturbation theory. In first order an ``exchange-only'' Kohn-Sham procedure is obtained, that is a generalization of a recently presented time-dependent optimized potential method. The exact, in higher order, but quite complicated expressions for the exchange-correlation potential may serve as a starting point for the construction of approximate exchange-correlation potentials. An adiabatic connection or coupling constant path between a time-dependent physical system and its corresponding Kohn-Sham system is introduced.

The time-dependent Kohn–Sham scheme

Carsten A. Ullrich

This chapter introduces the time-dependent Kohn-Sham scheme. The first section shows how an interacting time-dependent many-body system can be replaced by an auxiliary noninteracting system which reproduces the exact time-dependent density. This noninteracting system is called the Kohn-Sham system. It features an effective single-particle potential, consisting of external, Hartree, and exchange-correlation potential. The Kohn-Sham formalism is then generalized to spin-dependent systems. The exchange-correlation potential needs to be approximated in practice. Of particular importance is the adiabatic approximation, which uses any static exchange-correlation potential and evaluates it with time-dependent densities. The last two sections deal with practical issues related to the numerical implementation of the time-dependent Kohn-Sham scheme, namely, the meaning of self-consistency and unitary time propagation. The Crank-Nicholson algorithm is introduced, and important practical concepts such as the predictor-corrector scheme and absorbing boundary conditions are discussed.

A reformulation of time-dependent Kohn–Sham theory in terms of the second time derivative of the density

Walter Tarantino, Carsten A. Ullrich

The Kohn-Sham approach to time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) can be formulated, in principle, exactly by invoking the force-balance equation for the density, which leads to an explicit expression for the exchange-correlation potential as an implicit density functional. It is shown that this suggests a reformulation of TDDFT in terms of the second time derivative of the density, rather than the density itself. The result is a time-local Kohn-Sham scheme of second-order in time whose causal structure is more transparent than that of the usual Kohn-Sham formalism. The scheme can be used to construct new approximations at the exchange-only level and beyond, and it offers a straightforward definition of the exact adiabatic approximation.

Inverse Kohn–Sham Equations Derived from the Density Equation Theory

T. Kato, Katsuyuki Nobusada, Shinji Saito

We formulate the inverse Kohn–Sham equations based on the density equation theory. The present formulation relies on neither action functionals nor force balance equation, but is constructed by comparing the first-order density equation for the electron interacting real system and that for the electron non-interacting Kohn–Sham system. The derived inverse Kohn–Sham integral equation requires information of an exact ground-state electron density to calculate an exact Kohn–Sham potential for a ground state and it requires an exact time-dependent electron density and a time-derivative of the exact time-dependent first-order density matrix to calculate an exact time-dependent Kohn–Sham potential. A possible algorithm to construct the Kohn–Sham potential for a ground state is suggested as well as a solution algorithm for the time-dependent inverse Kohn–Sham problem without resorting to any approximations. These two solution algorithms, in combination, suggest a way to perform an exact time-dependent density functional calculation as a predictive method.

Developing new and understanding old approximations in TDDFT

Lionel Lacombe, Neepa T. Maitra

When a system has evolved far from a ground-state, the adiabatic approximations commonly used in time-dependent density functional theory calculations completely fail in some applications, while giving qualitatively good predictions in others, and sometimes even quantitative predictions. It is not clearly understood why this is so, and developing practical approximations going beyond the adiabatic approximation remains a challenge. This paper explores three different lines of investigation. First, an expression for the exact time-dependent exchange-correlation potential suggests that the accuracy of an adiabatic approximation is intimately related to the deviation between the natural orbital occupation numbers of the physical system and those of the Kohn-Sham system, and we explore this on some exactly-solvable model systems. The exact expression further suggests a path to go beyond the adiabatic approximations, and in the second part we discuss a newly proposed class of memory-dependent approximations developed in this way. Finally, we derive a new expression for the exact exchange-correlation potential from a coupling-constant path integration.

Exploring non-adiabatic approximations to the exchange-correlation functional of TDDFT

Fuks, Johanna Ildemar, Lionel Lacombe, Nielsen, Søren E. B. +1 more

A decomposition of the exact exchange-correlation potential of time-dependent density functional theory into an interaction component and a kinetic component offers a new starting point for non-adiabatic approximations. The components are expressed in terms of the exchange-correlation hole and the difference between the one-body density matrix of the interacting and Kohn-Sham systems, which must be approximated in terms of quantities accessible from the Kohn-Sham evolution. We explore several preliminary approximations, evaluate their fulfillment of known exact conditions, and test their performance on simple model systems for which available exact solutions indicate the significance of going beyond the adiabatic approximation.

Exact time-dependent Kohn-Sham potential for interacting few-body systems.

Rudolph J Magyar

Exact Time-Dependent Kohn-Sham Potential for Interacting Few-Body SystemsTime-dependent density functional theory enables practical simulations of the dynamic many-electron systems, but one of the biggest obstacles to reliable application is the quality of the approximate potential. It is often difficult to determine whether ever-more sophisticated approximations properly include new physics, as there exist few benchmark exact potentials.Towards this ends, we have developed and tested a scheme to extract the exact (non-adiabatic) time-dependent Kohn-Sham potential for few body systems. We will present some examples on 1D model systems. The approach is general and can be used to back engineer high-level quantum mechanical simulations to gain insight into TDDFT on a broad scale.
