Time-dependent potential through an Ansatz for the Kohn-Sham orbitals

Abstract

Given the time-evolution of an electron charge density, the local potential in Kohn-Sham time-dependent density functional theory (KS-TDDFT) can be modeled as a sum of instantaneous and dynamic contributions by assuming a certain form of the time-dependent Kohn-Sham (TD-KS) orbitals. The instantaneous part is obtained numerically using methods from ground-state density functional theory (DFT) and the dynamic part is expressed in terms of a velocity potential that depends on the electron current density. The suggested form of the TD-KS orbitals satisfies several known constraints (orthonormality, N-representability, J-representability), and the domain of validity is shown to depend on the evolution of the instantaneous quantities. Through this decomposition, we can relate time-dependent and ground -state V-representability. The resulting potentials are shown numerically to approximate the exact time-dependent Kohn-Sham potentials for a set of 3 non-singlet two-particle systems (a Kohn-mode, a Coulomb explosion, and a double quantum well) where the exact solutions and reference densities are known or obtained through configuration interaction (CI) approaches.

Accurate real-time evolution of electron densities and ground-state properties from generalized Kohn-Sham theory

M. J. P. Hodgson, Jack Wetherell

The exact static and time-dependent Kohn-Sham (KS) exchange-correlation potential is extremely challenging to approximate as it is a local multiplicative potential that depends on the electron density everywhere in the system. The KS approach can be generalized by allowing part of the potential to be spatially nonlocal. We take this nonlocal part to be that of unrestricted Hartree-Fock theory. The additional local correlation potential in principle ensures that the single-particle density exactly equals the many-body density. In our case, the local correlation potential is predominantly nearsighted in its dependence on the density and hence an (adiabatic) local-density approximation to this potential yields accurate ground-state properties and real-time densities for one-dimensional test systems.

Computational complexity of time-dependent density functional theory

J D Whitfield, M-H Yung, D G Tempel +2 more

Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is rapidly emerging as a premier method for solving dynamical many-body problems in physics and chemistry. The mathematical foundations of TDDFT are established through the formal existence of a fictitious non-interacting system (known as the Kohn–Sham system), which can reproduce the one-electron reduced probability density of the actual system. We build upon these works and show that on the interior of the domain of existence, the Kohn–Sham system can be efficiently obtained given the time-dependent density. We introduce a V -representability parameter which diverges at the boundary of the existence domain and serves to quantify the numerical difficulty of constructing the Kohn–Sham potential. For bounded values of V -representability, we present a polynomial time quantum algorithm to generate the time-dependent Kohn–Sham potential with controllable error bounds.

Critique of the foundations of time-dependent density-functional theory

J. Schirmer, Andreas Dreuw

The general expectation that, in principle, the time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) is an exact formulation of the time evolution of an interacting $N$-electron system is critically reexamined. It is demonstrated that the previous TDDFT foundation, resting on four theorems by Runge and Gross (RG) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 52, 997 (1984)], is invalid because undefined phase factors corrupt the RG action integral functionals. Our finding confirms much of a previous analysis by van Leeuwen [Int. J. Mod. Phys. B 15, 1969 (2001)]. To analyze the RG theorems and other aspects of TDDFT, an utmost simplification of the Kohn-Sham (KS) concept has been introduced, in which the ground-state density is obtained from a single KS equation for one spatial (spinless) orbital. The time-dependent (TD) form of this radical Kohn-Sham (rKS) scheme, which has the same validity status as the ordinary KS version, has proved to be a valuable tool for analysis. The rKS concept is used to clarify also the alternative nonvariational formulation of TD KS theory. We argue that it is just a formal theory, allowing one to reproduce but not predict the time development of the exact density of the interacting $N$-electron system. Besides the issue of the formal exactness of TDDFT, it is shown that both the static and time-dependent KS linear response equations neglect the particle-particle ($p$-$p$) and hole-hole ($h$-$h$) matrix elements of the perturbing operator. For a local (multiplicative) operator this does not lead to a loss of information due to a remarkable general property of local operators. Accordingly, no logical inconsistency arises with respect to DFT, because DFT requires any external potential to be local. For a general nonlocal operator the error resulting from the neglected matrix elements is of second order in the electronic repulsion.

Inverse Kohn–Sham Equations Derived from the Density Equation Theory

T. Kato, Katsuyuki Nobusada, Shinji Saito

We formulate the inverse Kohn–Sham equations based on the density equation theory. The present formulation relies on neither action functionals nor force balance equation, but is constructed by comparing the first-order density equation for the electron interacting real system and that for the electron non-interacting Kohn–Sham system. The derived inverse Kohn–Sham integral equation requires information of an exact ground-state electron density to calculate an exact Kohn–Sham potential for a ground state and it requires an exact time-dependent electron density and a time-derivative of the exact time-dependent first-order density matrix to calculate an exact time-dependent Kohn–Sham potential. A possible algorithm to construct the Kohn–Sham potential for a ground state is suggested as well as a solution algorithm for the time-dependent inverse Kohn–Sham problem without resorting to any approximations. These two solution algorithms, in combination, suggest a way to perform an exact time-dependent density functional calculation as a predictive method.

Adiabatic and local approximations for the Kohn-Sham potential in time-dependent Hubbard chains

Lorenzo Mancini, J. D. Ramsden, M. J. P. Hodgson +1 more

We obtain the exact Kohn-Sham potentials ${V}_{\mathrm{KS}}$ of time-dependent density-functional theory for one-dimensional Hubbard chains, driven by a dc external field, using the time-dependent electron density and current density obtained from exact many-body time evolution. The exact ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}}$ is compared to the adiabatically exact ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}}^{\mathrm{ad}}$ and the ``instantaneous ground state'' ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}}^{\mathrm{igs}}$. The latter is shown to work effectively in some cases when the former fails. Approximations for the exchange-correlation potential ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}}$ and its gradient, based on the local density and on the local current density, are also considered and both physical quantities are observed to be far outside the reach of any possible local approximation. Insight into the respective roles of ground-state and excited-state correlation in the time-dependent system, as reflected in the potentials, is provided by the pair correlation function.
