Abstract

We obtain the exact Kohn-Sham potentials ${V}_{\mathrm{KS}}$ of time-dependent density-functional theory for one-dimensional Hubbard chains, driven by a dc external field, using the time-dependent electron density and current density obtained from exact many-body time evolution. The exact ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}}$ is compared to the adiabatically exact ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}}^{\mathrm{ad}}$ and the ``instantaneous ground state'' ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}}^{\mathrm{igs}}$. The latter is shown to work effectively in some cases when the former fails. Approximations for the exchange-correlation potential ${V}_{\mathrm{xc}}$ and its gradient, based on the local density and on the local current density, are also considered and both physical quantities are observed to be far outside the reach of any possible local approximation. Insight into the respective roles of ground-state and excited-state correlation in the time-dependent system, as reflected in the potentials, is provided by the pair correlation function.

Accurate real-time evolution of electron densities and ground-state properties from generalized Kohn-Sham theory

M. J. P. Hodgson, Jack Wetherell

The exact static and time-dependent Kohn-Sham (KS) exchange-correlation potential is extremely challenging to approximate as it is a local multiplicative potential that depends on the electron density everywhere in the system. The KS approach can be generalized by allowing part of the potential to be spatially nonlocal. We take this nonlocal part to be that of unrestricted Hartree-Fock theory. The additional local correlation potential in principle ensures that the single-particle density exactly equals the many-body density. In our case, the local correlation potential is predominantly nearsighted in its dependence on the density and hence an (adiabatic) local-density approximation to this potential yields accurate ground-state properties and real-time densities for one-dimensional test systems.

Exact Density-Functional Potentials for Time-Dependent Quasiparticles

J. D. Ramsden, Rex W. Godby

We calculate the exact Kohn-Sham potential that describes, within time-dependent density-functional theory, the propagation of an electron quasiparticle wave packet of nonzero crystal momentum added to a ground-state model semiconductor. The potential is observed to have a highly nonlocal functional dependence on the charge density, in both space and time, giving rise to features entirely lacking in local or adiabatic approximations. The dependence of the nonequilibrium part of the Kohn-Sham electric field on the local current and charge density is identified as a key element of the correct Kohn-Sham functional.

Time-dependent potential through an Ansatz for the Kohn-Sham orbitals

Rudolph J Magyar

Given the time-evolution of an electron charge density, the local potential in Kohn-Sham time-dependent density functional theory (KS-TDDFT) can be modeled as a sum of instantaneous and dynamic contributions by assuming a certain form of the time-dependent Kohn-Sham (TD-KS) orbitals. The instantaneous part is obtained numerically using methods from ground-state density functional theory (DFT) and the dynamic part is expressed in terms of a velocity potential that depends on the electron current density. The suggested form of the TD-KS orbitals satisfies several known constraints (orthonormality, N-representability, J-representability), and the domain of validity is shown to depend on the evolution of the instantaneous quantities. Through this decomposition, we can relate time-dependent and ground -state V-representability. The resulting potentials are shown numerically to approximate the exact time-dependent Kohn-Sham potentials for a set of 3 non-singlet two-particle systems (a Kohn-mode, a Coulomb explosion, and a double quantum well) where the exact solutions and reference densities are known or obtained through configuration interaction (CI) approaches.

Time-Dependent Density-Functional Theory and Strongly Correlated Systems: Insight from Numerical Studies

Claudio Verdozzi

We illustrate the scope of time-dependent density-functional theory for strongly correlated (lattice) models out of equilibrium. Using the exact many-body time evolution, we reverse engineer the exact exchange correlation (xc) potential v_(xc) for small Hubbard chains exposed to time-dependent fields. We introduce an adiabatic local density approximation to v_(xc) for the 1D Hubbard model and compare it to exact results, to gain insight about approximate xc potentials. Finally, we provide some remarks on the v-representability for the 1D Hubbard model.

Hydrodynamic perspective on memory in time-dependent density-functional theory

M. Thiele, Stephan Kümmel

The adiabatic approximation of time-dependent density-functional theory is studied in the context of nonlinear excitations of two-electron singlet systems. We compare the exact time evolution of these systems to the adiabatically exact one obtained from time-dependent Kohn-Sham calculations relying on the exact ground-state exchange-correlation potential. Thus, we can show under which conditions the adiabatic approximation breaks down and memory effects become important. The hydrodynamic formulation of quantum mechanics allows us to interpret these results and relate them to dissipative effects in the Kohn-Sham system. We show how the breakdown of the adiabatic approximation can be inferred from the rate of change of the ground-state noninteracting kinetic energy.

Many-body quantum dynamics from the density

S. E. B. Nielsen, Michael Ruggenthaler, Robert van Leeuwen

We present a local control scheme to construct the external potential v that, for a given initial state, produces a prescribed time-dependent density in an interacting quantum many-body system. This numerical method is efficient and stable even for large and rapid density variations irrespective of the initial state and the interactions. It can at the same time be used to answer fundamental v -representability questions in density functional theory. In particular, in the absence of interactions, it allows us to construct the exact time-dependent Kohn-Sham potential for arbitrary initial states. We illustrate the method in a correlated one-dimensional two-electron system with different interactions, initial states and densities. For a Kohn-Sham system with a correlated initial state we demonstrate the interplay between memory and initial-state dependence as well as the failure of any adiabatic approximation.
