Abstract

We propose a method for all-optical switching and wavelength conversion using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We discuss the mechanism for the transfer of information in this scheme and determine the conditions for which N×N wavelength conversion can be realized. We compare the properties and limits of an EIT-based switch to conventional wavelength converters.

Optical pulse storage and forwarding with multi-wavelength conversion

W.C.R. Nascimento, D. P. Caetano, J. Miguel Hickmann

This study demonstrates a different type of all-optical switch with multi-wavelength conversion, capable of storing and controllably forwarding optical pulses. The mechanism behind this device is electromagnetically induced transparency, where an optical signal interacts resonantly with a three-level atomic system and a control field. To describe the dynamics of this system, a set of coupled partial differential equations is solved numerically.

Quantum Information Processing Using Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Kouichi ICHIMURA

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is one of the simplest and most fundamental of schemes to control the quantum-mechanical properties of matter and light, such as the superposition of states, entanglement, and quantum interference, by using light, the nature of which is considerably known. EIT can be employed to realize quantum information processing in applications such as optical quantum logic gates, quantum memories, and quantum computers.

We have studied electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in metamaterials for various schemes corresponding to those in an atomic medium. We numerically calculate a symmetric dolmen scheme of metamaterials corresponding to a tripod model of EIT-based optical switching and illustrate plasmonic double dark resonances. Our study provides a fundamental understanding and useful guidelines in using metamaterials for plasmonic-based all-optical information processing.

Efficient vacuum ultraviolet generation using electomagnetically induced transparency

The techniques of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be employed to create a nonlinear response at a given wavelength that is equal in magnitude to the linear response at that wavelength. Physically, this allows frequency converters wherein unity photon-to-photon conversion occurs within a single coherence length, i.e., in that distance that causes a n phase slip between the driving polarization and the generated field. These ideas were first implemented by Jain and coworkers' to convert 425-nm radiation to 293-nm radiation with an energy conversion efficiency of 40%. We have extended that work to the generation of coherent radiation below 200nm, outside the transparency window of most nonlinear crystals. This was possible with moderate pump intensities without the need for phase matching.

Phase-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency

We report on the experimental demonstration of phase-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). This effect is based on a quantum interference in closed-loop schemes of interaction of atoms with the radiation. It allows us to control optical properties of the medium by the phases of the laser fields. We discuss some of the possible applications of phase-dependent EIT.

Phase-dependent double-Λ electromagnetically induced transparency

We theoretically investigate a double-Λ electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system. The property of the double-Λ medium with a closed-loop configuration depends on the relative phase of the applied laser fields. This phase-dependent mechanism differentiates the double-Λ medium from the conventional Kerr-based nonlinear medium, e.g., EIT-based nonlinear medium discussed by Harris and Hau [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 4611 (1999)], which depends only on the intensities of the applied laser fields. Steady-state analytical solutions for the phase-dependent system are obtained by solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations. In addition, we discuss efficient all-optical phase modulation and coherent light amplification based on the proposed double-Λ EIT scheme.
