Abstract

We propose a scheme to realize a transition from delocalization to localization of light waves via electromagnetically induced transparency. The system we suggested is a resonant cold atomic ensemble having $N$ configuration, with a control field consisting of two pairs of laser beams with different cross angles, which produce an electromagnetically induced quasiperiodic waveguide (EIQPW) for the propagation of a signal field. By appropriately tuning the incommensurate rate or relative modulation strength between the two pairs of control-field components, the signal field can exhibit the delocalization-localization transition as it transports inside the atomic ensemble. The delocalization-localization transition point is determined and the propagation property of the signal field is studied in detail. Our work provides a way of realizing wave localization via atomic coherence, which is quite different from the conventional, off-resonant mechanism-based Aubry-Andre model, and the great controllability of the EIQPW also allows an easy manipulation of the delocalization-localization transition.

Localization of light in the atomic medium induced by the Hermite–cosine–Gauss field

X. Wei, Bin Chen, Chunfang Wang +1 more

This paper provides a way of realizing light wave localization via electromagnetically induced transparency, which is quite different from the traditional, off-resonant mechanism-based Aubry-Andre model. The localization of light in a one-dimensional atomic medium is reported in this paper. The medium suggested in this paper is a resonant cold atomic ensemble with N-configuration, which can be modulated to be a quasi-periodic structure in the center area. As the paraxial signal field propagates in the medium, localization can be realized. The localization point and the propagation properties of the signal field are studied in this paper.

Localization-delocalization transition in an electromagnetically induced photonic lattice

Rui Tian, Shuai Li, Maksims Arzamasovs +3 more

We investigate the localization-delocalization transition (LDT) in an electromagnetically induced photonic lattice. A four-level tripod-type scheme in atomic ensembles is proposed to generate an effective photonic moir\'e lattice through the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) mechanism. By taking advantage of the tunable atomic coherence, we show that both periodic (commensurable) and aperiodic (incommensurable) structure can be created in such a photonic moir\'e lattice via adjusting the twist angle between two superimposed periodic patterns with square primitive. Furthermore, we also find that by tuning the amplitudes of these two superimposed periodic patterns, the localization-delocalization transition occurs for the light propagating in the aperiodic moir\'e lattice. Such localization is shown to link the fact that the flat bands of moir\'e lattice support quasi-nondiffracting localized modes and thus induce the localization of the initially localized beam. It would provide a promising approach to control the light propagation via the electromagnetically induced photonic lattice.

Realization of two-dimensional Aubry-André localization of light waves via electromagnetically induced transparency

Hui‐jun Li, Jian-Peng Dou, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to construct a two-dimensional Aubry-Andr\'e (AA) model and realize two-dimensional AA localization of light waves via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The system we suggest is a cold, resonant atomic gas with an $N$-type level configuration and interacting with probe, control, assisted, and far-detuned laser fields. We show that under EIT conditions the probe-field envelope obeys a modified nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a quasiperiodic potential, which becomes a two-dimensional nonlinear AA model when the system parameters are suitably chosen. The quasiperiodic potential is obtained by the cross-phase modulation of the assisted field and the Stark shift of the far-detuned laser field. In addition, the cubic nonlinearity term appearing in the model is contributed by the self-phase modulation of the probe field. We demonstrate that the system can be used to not only realize various two-dimensional AA localizations of light waves, but also to display nonlinearity and dimensionality effects on the AA localizations.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Effect for Two Level Ensemble Using Multi Mode-Silicon Waveguide Coupled to Plasmonic Resonator Array

Jitendra Kumar Paswan, Sippy Kumari

We have studied the electromagnetically induced transparency for a two level ensemble interacting with two orthogonal optical modes. We have made a approach for a multimode silicon waveguide coupled to a plasmonic resonator array. We have shown that a simple periodic ensemble of resonant metal nanoparticles within a dielectric waveguide supported a transparent waveguide plasmon polariton mode for guided slow light propagation. Such systems inhert the strongly dispersive properties of the nanoparticles embedded in the waveguide but do not succumb to the associated absorptive losses by utilizing the system’s transparency Light propagation through the system provided extremely strong dispersion from the resonators, but suffers very low propagation loss by exploiting the system’s transparency. Dispersion is controllable by tuning the coupling strength of localized plasmon and waveguide modes. We have found that atomic electromagnetically induced transparency occurred for a non zero pump field allowing mutual coupling of all states and induced destructive quantum interference of the probe field’s absorption via the transition. The obtained results were found in good agreement with previously obtained results.

Dynamic Quantum Erasure Mediated by Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Hailong Zhu, Jing Lu

We propose a scheme on control of the transition from quantum decoherence to coherence of a considered system S provided by the polarization degree of freedom of a probe field coupled to its motional degrees of freedom representing the environment B. A magneto-optically manipulated atomic ensemble with a tripod configuration is used to enhance the coupling between systems S and B. The spatial profile of the external fields induces a spatially varying potential for system B in the gas cell with identical and noninteracting atoms at different transverse points. It is found that the coherence of the system S can be maintained, lost or gained by properly choosing the incident positions of the probe field with respect to the center of the control laser field, and the two photon detuning for each components of the probe laser field.

Doubly-resonant-cavity electromagnetically induced transparency

Xinxin Hu, Changling Zhao, Zhu-Bo Wang +6 more

We present an experimental study on the cavity-atom ensemble system, and realize the doubly-resonant cavity enhanced electromagnetically induced transparency, where both the probe and control lasers are resonant with a Fabry-Perot cavity. We demonstrate the precise frequency manipulating of the hybrid optical-atomic resonances, through either temperature or cavity length tuning. In such a system, the control power can be greatly enhanced due to the cavity, and all-optical switching is achieved with a much lower control laser power compared to previous studies. A new theoretical model is developed to describe the effective three-wave mixing process between spin-wave and optical modes. Interesting non-Hermitian physics are predicted theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. Such a doubly-resonant cavity-atom ensemble system without a specially designed cavity can be used for future applications, such as optical signal storage and microwave-to-optical frequency conversion.
