Abstract

This paper provides a way of realizing light wave localization via electromagnetically induced transparency, which is quite different from the traditional, off-resonant mechanism-based Aubry-Andre model. The localization of light in a one-dimensional atomic medium is reported in this paper. The medium suggested in this paper is a resonant cold atomic ensemble with N-configuration, which can be modulated to be a quasi-periodic structure in the center area. As the paraxial signal field propagates in the medium, localization can be realized. The localization point and the propagation properties of the signal field are studied in this paper.

Realization of two-dimensional Aubry-André localization of light waves via electromagnetically induced transparency

Hui‐jun Li, Jian-Peng Dou, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to construct a two-dimensional Aubry-Andr\'e (AA) model and realize two-dimensional AA localization of light waves via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The system we suggest is a cold, resonant atomic gas with an $N$-type level configuration and interacting with probe, control, assisted, and far-detuned laser fields. We show that under EIT conditions the probe-field envelope obeys a modified nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a quasiperiodic potential, which becomes a two-dimensional nonlinear AA model when the system parameters are suitably chosen. The quasiperiodic potential is obtained by the cross-phase modulation of the assisted field and the Stark shift of the far-detuned laser field. In addition, the cubic nonlinearity term appearing in the model is contributed by the self-phase modulation of the probe field. We demonstrate that the system can be used to not only realize various two-dimensional AA localizations of light waves, but also to display nonlinearity and dimensionality effects on the AA localizations.

Controlling the delocalization-localization transition of light via electromagnetically induced transparency

Jing Cheng, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to realize a transition from delocalization to localization of light waves via electromagnetically induced transparency. The system we suggested is a resonant cold atomic ensemble having $N$ configuration, with a control field consisting of two pairs of laser beams with different cross angles, which produce an electromagnetically induced quasiperiodic waveguide (EIQPW) for the propagation of a signal field. By appropriately tuning the incommensurate rate or relative modulation strength between the two pairs of control-field components, the signal field can exhibit the delocalization-localization transition as it transports inside the atomic ensemble. The delocalization-localization transition point is determined and the propagation property of the signal field is studied in detail. Our work provides a way of realizing wave localization via atomic coherence, which is quite different from the conventional, off-resonant mechanism-based Aubry-Andre model, and the great controllability of the EIQPW also allows an easy manipulation of the delocalization-localization transition.

Manipulating slow-light propagation modes in cold atomic media

Jing Cheng, Shensheng Han

Due to the finite transverse distribution of the control field and cold atoms, there can exist a set of guiding modes for ultraslow signal field propagating in an atomic medium with electromagnetically induced transparency. For cold four-level atoms, these guiding modes can be manipulated by varying the laser fields and atomic distribution. By carefully designing the distribution of the induced refractive index, we show that it is possible to realize single mode operation for slow light propagation which may have practical applications.

Manipulating classical and nonclassical light with cold atoms

J. F. Chen

The light wave propagating in a dispersive medium can be formularized as electromagnetic (EM) fields or quantized as a pair of Hermitian operators. The fascinating optical phenomena display classical and nonclassical properties, depending on whether they can be described by the classical EM field theory. A cold atomic ensemble with neligible inhomogenous Doppler broadening is ideal to explore the interaction between light and matter. A typical problem in classical pulse propagation is optical transients, which induced by rapid response of dispersive medium to the sudden change of the driving radiation fields. With cold atoms confined in the two-dimensional magneto-optical trap, whose optical depth is controllable in our system, optical precursor and free-induction decay both classified as optical transients are observed in a single experiment with different conditions. Moreover, the information velocity limit is verified in superluminal medium, with the observation and analysis of precursors. Characterized with narrow linewidth and long coherence time, paired photons generated from cold atomic ensemble in four-wave mixing process possess irreplaceable advantage in quantum optics area. Temporal modulation of narrow-band paired photons can be achieved by directly modulating the generated photons or by modulating the classical control fields. After successfully reshaping the temporal waveform of the paired photons, heralded single photon source is well prepared for studying the propagation of nonclassical single photon in dispersive medium. The speed limit imposed by Einstein Causality principle is firstly experimentally verified on single photon level.

Optical Precursors with Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Cold Atoms

Dong Wei, J. F. Chen, M. M. T. Loy +2 more

We report the observation of Sommerfeld-Brillouin optical precursors generated from a long square-modulated laser pulse propagating through a cold atomic ensemble with electromagnetically induced transparency. The optical depth (alpha(0)L) of the medium can be varied from 0 up to 50. We demonstrated that the step-on rising and step-off falling edges propagate with the speed of light in vacuum without a slow light effect. At high alpha(0)L, the precursor is separated from the delayed main pulse at the rising edge, while at the falling edge, we observe damped oscillatory structures resulting from the interference between the precursor and main field.

Adiabatic propagation of quantized light pulses in an atomic medium with the tripod level configuration

I. E. Mazets

We consider adiabatic propagation of a pair of quantized light pulses in a coherently prepared atomic medium with the tripod level configuration. We find that under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency, two distinct polariton modes are simultaneously formed in the medium. These polaritons, represented by certain coherent superpositions of the quantized fields, have different group velocities; the fast one propagates at essentially the speed of light, while the group velocity of the slow polariton can be dynamically reduced to zero. The state mapping between the electromagnetic field and atomic ensemble is also demonstrated.
