Nonlinearity enhancement in rubidium vapor with vectorial mechanism

Abstract

We consider the optical nonlinearity enhancement, which is obtained for rubidium vapor by using beams with mutually orthogonal polarizations. The simple three-level model and numerical estimations for a full transition model are reported. Different from the traditional Kerr nonlinearity, the vectorial mechanism nonlinearity strength diminishes for higher intensities, as well as for low ones, and optimal intensity level exists.

Vectorial mechanism of nonlinearity enhancement in rubidium vapor

N. Korneev, Chrystian Gutiérrez Parra

We report the calculations of vectorial nonlinear properties of rubidium vapor for 87Rb D2 transition at moderate intensities. Different from Kerr nonlinearity, optimal intensity exists here, which depends on beam geometry. For intensities close to the optimal, the vectorial mechanism is much more efficient than a scalar one.

Vectorial mechanism of nonlinearity enhancement in rubidium vapor

N. Korneev, Chrystian Gutiérrez Parra

We report the calculations of vectorial nonlinear properties of rubidium vapor for Rb87D2 transition at moderate intensities. The results are compared with self-rotation and diffraction experiments. Different from Kerr nonlinearity, optimal intensity exists here, which depends on beam geometry. For intensities close to the optimal, the vectorial mechanism is much more efficient than a scalar one, and strong self-action for wide beams can be obtained with it.

Resonant nonlinearity enhancement in rubidium vapor with additional optical pumping

N. Korneev, Y.M. Torres, Chrystian Gutiérrez Parra +1 more

We investigate the enhancement of characteristic nonlinear phase shift in warm rubidium vapor for a signal beam using an additional pump laser at different frequency. A numerical model based on density matrix formalism is used. Experimental results of self-rotation and diffraction in a three-wave mixing process as well as beam amplification are shown. For 87Rb transition D2 line with Fg = 1, the nonlinearity to absorption ratio can be enhanced approximately two times with a pump beam tuned at Fg = 2 transition in a co-propagating scheme, which produces strong nonlinear interaction for Fg = 1 line at signal beam powers of ~10 mW.

Observation of Large Kerr Nonlinearity at Low Light Intensities

Hoonsoo Kang, Yifu Zhu

We report an experimental observation of large Kerr nonlinearity with vanishing linear susceptibilities in coherently prepared four-level rubidium atoms. Quantum coherence and interference manifested by electromagnetically induced transparency suppress the linear susceptibilities and greatly enhance the nonlinear susceptibilities at low light intensities. The measured Kerr nonlinearity is comparable in magnitude to the linear dispersion in a simple two-level system and is several orders of magnitude greater than the Kerr nonlinearity of a conventional three-level scheme under similar conditions.

Atomic noise spectra in nonlinear magneto-optical rotation in a rubidium vapor

Hebin Li, Vladimir A. Sautenkov, T. Varzhapetyan +2 more

We have studied the noise spectra in a nonlinear magneto-optical rotation experiment in a rubidium vapor. We observed the reduction of noise in the intensity difference of two orthogonally polarized components of the laser beam. The dependence of the noise level on both the frequency and the longitudinal magnetic field has been studied. We found that the optimal condition for the noise reduction is to work around zero longitudinal magnetic field, where the intensity correlation between the two orthogonally polarized components is maximum. Our results can be used to reduce or eliminate the atomic excess noise, therefore improving the sensitivity of nonlinear magneto-optical rotation magnetometers and other atom-optical-based applications.

Enhanced Kerr Nonlinearities Caused by Cross Talk Between Optical and Microwave Transitions

Zhengfeng Hu, Jianliao Deng, Chunguang Du +1 more

We investigate the enhanced Kerr nonlinearities in four-level atomic vapors driven by a coupling, probe and microwave fields. Under the optical one-photon and two-photon resonant conditions, the linear and nonlinear responses of the weak probe field can be modified by the cross talk among optical and microwave transitions. The enhanced Kerr nonlinearity can form bright optical solitons of the probe field.
