Influence of the width of a spectral line on the excitation of stimulated scattering in resonators

Abstract

An analysis is made of the influence of the width of the pump line on the stimulated scattering in Fabry–Perot and ring resonators which are tuned both to the pump frequency and to the frequency of the Stokes component. It is shown that the excitation threshold of the stimulated scattering in dispersion-free media is independent of the width of the pump line, because of the parametric interaction between the modes, whereas in media with a considerable dispersion the threshold is Δω p /Δω sp greater than the stimulated emission threshold under monochromatic pumping conditions (the subscripts "p" and "sp" refer to the pump wave and to the spontaneous Raman scattering). Analytic expressions are given for the amplitudes of the pump and Stokes fields at the excitation threshold and under steady-state conditions.

Influence of the spectral width and statistics of a Stokes signal on the efficiency of stimulated Raman scattering of nonmonochromatic pump radiation

G. P. Dzhotyan, Yu E D'yakov, Iosif G. Zubarev +2 more

A theoretical and experimental investigation was made of the amplification of a Stokes signal in a multimode pump field when the ratio of the spectral widths of the interacting fields was varied. In the pump intensity range I p < I cr ( I cr was a critical intensity) the gain increment was considerably less than the static value and it was governed entirely by the spectral distributions of the pump and Stokes signal. In the range I p > I cr the gain increment tended to the static value. An anomalous scatter of the Raman amplifier gain was observed experimentally for Δ ν s ≈Δ ν p ≫Δ ν l (Δ ν s ,Δ ν p , and Δ ν l were the line widths of the Stokes signal, pump, and spontaneous stimulated Raman scattering). A theory developed for the purpose indicated that the scatter was observed because the phase relationships between the interacting waves at the input into the medium varied from one measurement to another.

Theory of stimulated scattering of nonmonochromatic radiation

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, Michail G. Galushkin, O. I. Rechkin

A theory is developed of stimulated scattering of nonmonochromatic radiation whose spectral width is much greater than the spontaneous scattering line width or the frequency shift of the Stokes wave. It is shown that scattering of nonmonochromatic incident radiation under coherent conditions may take place as efficiently as for monochromatic pump radiation. The results apply to various types of stimulated scattering, in particular, to stimulated thermal scattering and stimulated scattering in media which are in thermodynamic nonequilibrium.

Theory of stimulated Raman scattering in a dispersive medium

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, E M Zemskov, V. K. Orlov

An analysis is made of the laws governing amplification of the Stokes wave in stimulated Raman scattering (STRS) in a dispersive medium for different models of wide-band pump radiation. An accurate solution of the STRS equations is obtained for pump radiation having a quadratically time-modulated phase. It is shown that for pump radiation for which the width of the instantaneous frequency spectrum is much less than the Raman scattering line width, the laws governing amplification of the Stokes wave differ substantially from those predicted by statistical STRS theory. Solutions of STRS equations in a dispersive medium are found for a model of temporally periodic pump radiation having a high intermode beat frequency.

Possibility of generation of femtosecond pulses by stimulated Raman scattering in optical resonators

V. N. Lugovoǐ, V. N. Streltsov

An analysis is made of parametric excitation of anti-Stokes components of stimulated Raman scattering in an optical resonator filled with a medium whose refractive index is dispersion-free. The case of steady generation of the first Stokes component is considered. Expressions are obtained for the amplitudes of steady-state fluctuations of the anti-Stokes components in the case of a weak reaction of these components on the pump radiation and on the first Stokes component. Various cases of frequency dependences of the intrinsic resonator losses are considered. Conditions are found under which a large number of anti-Stokes components with similar intensities is excited so that the anti-Stokes radiation leaving the resonator is a periodic sequence of ultrashort (femtosecond) pulses with one pulse per period.

Some possibilities of phase matching of Stokes components in stimulated Raman scattering

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, E S Bragina, Ya Z Virnik +1 more

It is shown theoretically that the Stokes components can be phase-matched in dispersion-free media if the stimulated Raman scattering occurs in a resonator transparent at the pump frequency or if the signal is amplified. The frequency pulling effects and the stability of single-frequency stimulated emission of N Stokes components in high- Q resonators are discussed.

Spectrum of Stokes component of the resonant stimulated Raman scattering in a multimode pump field

Anatoly A. Afanas'ev, B. A. Samson, N. B. Gubar

The theory of RSRS in a multi-mode pump field with a symmetric spectrum is developed. The spectral dependences of a RSRS-gain coefficient for the different values of distance between modes and amplitudes of pump modes are studied. The conditions of an arising of narrow resonances with width approximately (gamma) are defined.
