Some possibilities of phase matching of Stokes components in stimulated Raman scattering

Abstract

It is shown theoretically that the Stokes components can be phase-matched in dispersion-free media if the stimulated Raman scattering occurs in a resonator transparent at the pump frequency or if the signal is amplified. The frequency pulling effects and the stability of single-frequency stimulated emission of N Stokes components in high- Q resonators are discussed.

Possibility of generation of femtosecond pulses by stimulated Raman scattering in optical resonators

V. N. Lugovoǐ, V. N. Streltsov

An analysis is made of parametric excitation of anti-Stokes components of stimulated Raman scattering in an optical resonator filled with a medium whose refractive index is dispersion-free. The case of steady generation of the first Stokes component is considered. Expressions are obtained for the amplitudes of steady-state fluctuations of the anti-Stokes components in the case of a weak reaction of these components on the pump radiation and on the first Stokes component. Various cases of frequency dependences of the intrinsic resonator losses are considered. Conditions are found under which a large number of anti-Stokes components with similar intensities is excited so that the anti-Stokes radiation leaving the resonator is a periodic sequence of ultrashort (femtosecond) pulses with one pulse per period.

Stimulated Raman scattering in resonant nonequilibrium media

Oleg Kh Khasanov

An analysis is made of the propagation of a short coherent optical pulse in a three-level resonant medium with an essentially nonequidistant spectrum as a function of the degree of preexcitation of the medium. It is found that in addition to self-induced transparency and resonance scattering, stimulated Raman scattering (Stokes or anti-Stokes) should be observed under certain spatial phase-matching conditions. The area theorem is formulated for all radiation components. An analysis is made of the case of propagation of a resonant electromagnetic pulse of frequency ω in a system of three-level atoms having an equidistant spectrum. Under conditions of preexcitation of the medium at the frequency 2ω by longitudinal acoustic pulses, a scattered transverse acoustic wave at the frequency ω may be observed.

Correlation between Stokes and anti-Stokes radiation and the effect of phase modulation in stimulated Raman scattering of ultrashort pulses in a dispersive medium

Joachım Herrmann

A calculation is made of the intensity of the Stokes radiation in the stimulated Raman scattering of ultrashort light pulses in a dispersive medium employing the asymptotic approximation for arbitrary modulation of the amplitude and phase of the pump pulse. Particular attention was paid to the effect of phase modulation on the stimulated Raman scattering. Calculations were also made of the intensity of the anti-Stokes component in the scattering of an ultrashort pulse in a dispersive medium and of the optimal angle for the observation of the anti-Stokes rings.

Theory of stimulated Raman scattering in a dispersive medium

Igor' M Bel'dyugin, E M Zemskov, V. K. Orlov

An analysis is made of the laws governing amplification of the Stokes wave in stimulated Raman scattering (STRS) in a dispersive medium for different models of wide-band pump radiation. An accurate solution of the STRS equations is obtained for pump radiation having a quadratically time-modulated phase. It is shown that for pump radiation for which the width of the instantaneous frequency spectrum is much less than the Raman scattering line width, the laws governing amplification of the Stokes wave differ substantially from those predicted by statistical STRS theory. Solutions of STRS equations in a dispersive medium are found for a model of temporally periodic pump radiation having a high intermode beat frequency.

Theory of stimulated Raman scattering with broad-band lasers

Michael G. Raymer, Jan Mostowski, John L. Carlsten

The authors have extended the theory of stimulated Raman scattering to include the effects of laser bandwidths, in both the transient and steady-state regimes. The case of two interacting laser beams, a pump laser and a probe (Stokes) laser, is treated. Using the phase-diffusion model for laser bandwidth, the authors demonstrate that in the absence of dispersion, the forward Raman gain is essentially independent of the laser bandwidths in the high-gain limit, while in the low-gain limit the gain coefficient is inversely proportional to the sum of the bandwidths. It is further shown that when the pump-laser bandwidth is much larger than the linewidth of the Raman medium, the stimulated Stokes output assumes the same spectrum as the pump laser in the high-gain limit. A possible interpretation of these results is discussed assuming a "phase-locking" of the Stokes phase to the fluctuations in the pump-laser phase, due to the nonlinear interaction of the two beams through the Raman medium.

Stabilisation of emission in the first Stokes component of stimulated Raman scattering in the nonlinear regime

N. I. Shamrov

Equations of coherent stimulated Raman scattering were solved analytically for samples of length smaller than the wavelength of incident radiation, and numerically for extended media. The energy distribution function of Stokes pulses was determined. Transition from the linear regime of stimulated Raman scattering to the nonlinear regime was studied. The intensity of the first Stokes component was shown to be stable in the case of saturated amplification of spontaneous emission.
