Optical storage in quantized media

Gagik P. Djotyan, N. Sandor, Jozsef S. Bakos +1 more

The schemes of storing of images in quantum states of atoms being used nowadays are based on electromagnetically induced transparency. The images are stored in the collective atomic coherence with the storage time limited by different relaxation processes in the system with the transverse relaxation being the most detrimental among them. In this communication, we present a method of coherent writing of optical information (a transverse image) into the populations instead of the coherences of the metastable atomic states. The method is based on an action of a sequence of frequency chirped laser pulses on an atom with lambda-structure of working levels. Such storage results in drastic increase of the storage time. The reading out of the stored information is performed by measuring the population of one of the metastable atomic states.

Coherent population trapping for magnetic field measurements

Emilia A. Alipieva, C. Andreeva, Lachezar A. Avramov +17 more

The purpose of this communication is to summarize and compare the results obtained under the project "New all-optical systems and methods for magnetic and electromagnetic field measurement", financed by EC (contract G6RD-CT-2001-000642). The main aim of the project is investigation of the potential of different approaches based on the effect of Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) for magnetic field measurement. The investigated approaches are: (i) CPT prepared by coupling pairs of non-degenerate Zeeman sublevels belonging to the two ground-state hyperfine components of alkali atoms by means of polychromatic laser field; (ii) CPT prepared by coupling degenerate Zeeman sublevels belonging to a single ground-state hyperfine component of alkali atoms by means of single-frequency laser field of appropriate polarization at zero magnetic field (MF); and (iii) polychromatic laser field coupls pairs of non-degenerate Zeeman sublevels belonging to a single ground-state hyperfine level of alkali atoms.

Manipulation of the population of hyperfine sublevels by pulsed resonance electromagnetic fields

S. B. Sazonov

A method has been proposed for rapidly and deeply changing the population in the system of unequally populated hyperfine atomic levels, including the ground-state sublevels, due to the impact of mutually coherent pulsed resonance electromagnetic fields. The method can be implemented, e.g., to create new schemes of the amplification or effective absorption of the radiation passing through a medium, to develop the new field of quantum electronics, spintronics, involving the current of polarized electrons, and to create new schemes of quantum computers.
