Abstract

We experimentally demonstrate the slowing and storage of double light pulses in a Pr(3+):Y(2)SiO(5) crystal using a multilevel-tripod scheme. Owing to double dark-state polaritons of the tripod-type system, two signal pulses can be simultaneously slowed. Also, we realize the simultaneous storage (and retrieval) of double light pulses by switching off (and back on) the control field. Slowing and storage of double light pulses in solids may have practical applications in quantum information and quantum networks.

Generation and storage of double slow light pulses in a solid

We experimentally study the generation and storage of double slow light pulses in a Pr 3+ :Y 2 SiO 5 crystal. Under electromagnetically induced transparency, a single signal pulse is stored in the spin coherence of the crystal. By simultaneously switching on two control fields to recall the stored information, the spin coherence is converted into two slow light pulses with distinct frequencies. Furthermore, the storage and controlled retrieval of double slow light pulses are obtained by manipulating the control fields. This study of double slow light pulses may have practical applications in information processing and all-optical networks.

Optical information transfer between two light channels in a Pr^3+:Y_2SiO_5crystal

We experimentally demonstrate light storage and release in a four-level double-lambda atomic system of a Pr (3+):Y(2)SiO(5) crystal. Based on the technique of light storage, we realize optical information transfer between two light channels. The coherent optical information of a probe pulse stored in the crystal can be selectively released into two different light channels by varying the frequency and propagation direction of the switch-on control field.

Three-channel all-optical routing in a Pr^3+:Y_2SiO_5 crystal

Hai-Hua Wang, Yun-Fei Fan, Rong Wang +6 more

We experimentally demonstrate a three-channel all-optical routing based on light storage in a Pr(3+):Y(2)SiO(5) crystal. By switching off the control field under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency, the optical information of the probe light pulse can be stored in the crystal. When three retrieve control fields are switched on in the release process, the stored optical information from one light channel can be transferred (or distributed) into three different light channels. Also we show that this all-optical routing can be time-delayed. Such a multichannel all-optical routing in solids may have practical applications in quantum information and all-optical network.

Stopped Light at High Storage Efficiency in a Pr3+:Y2SiO5 Crystal

We demonstrate efficient storage and retrieval of light pulses by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a Pr^{3+}:Y_{2}SiO_{5} crystal. Using a ring-type multipass configuration, we increase the optical depth (OD) of the medium up to a factor of 16 towards OD≈96. Combining the large optical depth with optimized conditions for EIT, we reach a light storage efficiency of (76.3±3.5)%. In addition, we perform extended systematic measurements of the storage efficiency versus optical depth, control Rabi frequency, and probe pulse duration. The data confirm the theoretically expected behavior of an EIT-driven solid-state memory.
