Symmetry and size effects on the determination of critical indices

Abstract

The ferromagnetic, tricritical, and Baxter fixed points and the corresponding critical indices of a two-dimensional Ising-type model have been obtained using a Monte Carlo renormalization-group technique with three different transformations and for several lattice sizes. It is shown that symmetry considerations play an important role in the selection of the renormalization transformation.

Monte Carlo renormalization-group study of tricritical behavior in two dimensions

David Paul Landau, Robert H. Swendsen

Using a Monte Carlo renormalization-group (MCRG) method we study tricritical behavior in two very different two-dimensional spin models: the Blume-Capel ferromagnet and the next-nearest-neighbor Ising antiferromagnet. The MCRG method is used to locate accurately tricritical points independent of the convergence of eigenvalue estimates. Despite the different symmetries and the different renormalization transformations used for the two models, in both cases we find four relevant tricritical eigenvalues which are essentially identical for both models. For the antiferromagnet, there is no indication of any decomposition of the tricritical point as predicted by mean-field theory, for ratios of intrasublattice to intersublattice coupling as small as (1/8).

Three-component model and tricritical points: A renormalization-group study. Two dimensions

Miron Kaufman, Robert B. Griffiths, Julia M. Yeomans +1 more

The global phase diagram for a three-component lattice gas or spin-one Ising model with general single-site and nearest-neighbor "ferromagnetic" interactions is worked out for two-dimensional lattices using a Migdal-Kadanoff recursion relation. It differs in important qualitative respects from the corresponding mean-field phase diagram. The set of fixed points and flows provides the characteristic phase diagrams of the three-state Potts multicritical point and the ordinary ($n=1$) tricritical point in a complete set of symmetry-breaking fields. The latter is associated, in this renormalization-group scheme, with seven distinct critical fixed points, a number which is surprisingly large.

Phase Diagram and Critical Exponents of the ±J Ising Model in Finite Dimensions by Monte Carlo Renormalization Group

Yukiyasu Ozeki, Hidetoshi Nishimori

We have performed large-scale numerical simulations for the ± J Ising model on the simple cubic and the square lattices with asymmetric weight of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic bonds. The Monte Carlo renormalization group method is used to estimate T c , γ/ν, β/ν and ν at various points along the phase boundary between ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases including the tricritical point. The obtained values of T c and the resulting phase diagrams of the simple cubic and the square lattices are much more accurate than those estimated so far. In the simple cubic lattice, we find evidence for the possibility that universality of the ferromagnetic critical exponents holds along the critical line except at the tricritical point, while weak universality holds even at the tricritical point. Weak universality seems to hold also in the square lattice.

Monte Carlo renormalization-group study of the rectangular Ising ferromagnet: Universality and a fixed line

David Paul Landau, Robert H. Swendsen

The renormalization-group description of the anisotropic two-dimensional Ising model has been investigated with the use of Monte Carlo renormalization-group methods. We have been able to demonstrate the existence of a fixed line with universal critical exponents, in contrast to the nonuniversality of the Baxter fixed line. The possibility of a model with any given anisotropy being described by any point on the fixed line is demonstrated by explicit calculations.

Monte Carlo Studies of the Square Lattice Ising System with the Two-Dimensional Dipolar Interaction

Seizo Watarai, Keizô Yamamoto, Akira Nakanishi

Monte Carlo simulations are performed on the square lattice Ising system with both the nearest neighbor and the two-dimensional dipolar interactions in order to investigate the critical property of ferromagnetic phase transitions in this 2-dimensional system. Applying the finite size scaling theory to Monte Carlo data just near the transition point, the critical indices of this dipolar system are calculated and α=0.31±0.04, β =0.20±0.02, γ=1.08±0.20 and ν=0.72±0.10 are obtained. However, in the temperature region considerably far from the transition point, different values of α, β and γ seem to be adequate, which are rather close to those of the rigorous result of the 2-dimensional Ising model.
