Abstract

In this paper we propose a design algorithm for nonbinary LDPC (low-density parity-check) codes with low error-floors. The proposed algorithm determines the nonbinary values of the nonzero entries in the parity-check matrix in order to maximize the binary minimum distance of the designed nonbinary LDPC codes. We verify the performance of the designed nonbinary LDPC codes in the error-floor region by Monte Carlo simulation and importance sampling over BPSK (binary phase-shift keying) modulation.

An Effective Decoding Algorithm of LDPC Codes with Lowering Error Floors

Shuo-Chen Wang, Heejong Suh

In this paper, in order to improve performance of LDPC codes, we propose an effective algorithm with lowering error floor of LDPC codes. This method is done by breaking trapping sets, mostly caused by an undesirable structure. This algorithm is not need to observe all the errors, only need to break the trapping sets, to effect the effectiveness. Simulation results show that its performance can be significantly improved with this decoding algorithm.

High-Performance and Low-Complexity Decoding of High-Weight LDPC Codes

; A high-performance low-complexity decoding algorithm for LDPC codes is proposed in this paper, which has the advantages of both bit-flipping (BF) algorithm and sum-product algorithm (SPA). The proposed soft bit-flipping algorithm requires only simple comparison and addition operations for computing the messages between bit and check nodes, and the amount of those operations is also small. By increasing the utilization ratio of the computed messages and by adopting nonuniform quantization, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gap to the SPA is reduced to 0.4dB at the frame error rate of 10-4 with only 5-bit assignment for quantization. LDPC codes with high column or row weights, which are not suitable for the SPA decoding due to the complexity, can be practically implemented without much worsening the error performance.

Computing the Minimum Distance of Nonbinary LDPC Codes

Lei Liu, Jie Huang, Wuyang Zhou +1 more

Finding the minimum distance of low-density-parity-check (LDPC) codes is an NP-hard problem. Different from all existing works that focus on binary LDPC codes, we in this paper aim to compute the minimum distance of nonbinary LDPC codes, motivated by the fact that operating in a large Galois field provides one important degree of freedom to achieve both good waterfall and error-floor performance. Our method is based on the existing nearest nonzero codeword search (NNCS) method, but several modifications are incorporated for nonbinary LDPC codes, including the modified error impulse pattern, the dithering method, and the nonbinary decoder. Numerical results on the estimated minimum distances show that a code's minimum distance can be increased by careful selection of nonzero elements of the parity check matrix, or by increasing the mean column weight, or by increasing the size of the Galois field. These results support observations that have been made based on simulated performance in the literature. Finally, we provide an upper bound on the minimum distance for nonbinary quasi-cyclic LDPC codes.

Design of Nonbinary LDPC Codes Based on Message-Passing Algorithms

Sunghye Cho, Kyungwhoon Cheun, Kyeongcheol Yang

Short cycles in a nonbinary low-density parity-check (NB-LDPC) code may be even more harmful to its performance if they do not satisfy the so-called full rank condition (FRC). This is because they may induce low-weight codewords or absorbing sets in that case. Thus, it is important to count the number of short cycles not satisfying the FRC as well as the number of short cycles for analyzing the performance of an NB-LDPC code. In this paper, we first develop a novel message-passing algorithm and identify how it is related to the FRC. We then propose a low-complexity algorithm for counting the number of short cycles not satisfying the FRC in an NB-LDPC code, as well as the number of short cycles. Finally, we propose a low-complexity algorithm for designing an NB-LDPC code with low error floor. Depending on the modulation scheme, the codes constructed by the proposed design algorithm have similar or slightly worse performance, compared with those constructed via the method by Poulliat et al. However, the proposed design algorithm does not require a cycle enumeration algorithm with high complexity, and therefore is feasible even in the case of large code length, say ≥5000.
