Abstract

An analysis is made of model problems of the propagation of a spatial signal across an amplifier under saturation conditions. Certain advantages of a system with amplification of a Fourier transform of an amplitude signal are demonstrated. A method is suggested for visualization of phase objects based on the saturation of an amplifier.

Interaction of a spatially modulated wave of complex structure with a plane wave in a quantum amplifier

Tatiana I. Kuznetsova, D. Yu. Kuznetsov

A theoretical investigation is made of conversion (in an amplifier) of the image of a signal consisting of a wave with a pseudorandom transverse structure and a plane wave. Equations are obtained for the description of the mutual influence of these waves under saturation conditions. The results of calculations demonstrate a considerable change in the ratio of the intensities of these waves as a result of amplification.

Propagation of a pseudorandom spatially modulated optical signal through an amplifying medium

Tatiana I. Kuznetsova

A study is made of the propagation of a light wave having a complex transverse structure in an amplifier under saturation conditions. An equation is obtained for the signal-to-noise ratio at the amplifier exit.

Change in the shape of frequency-modulated light pulses during amplification

E G Lariontsev, V. N. Serkin

An analysis is made of the propagation of a frequency-modulated light pulse in a linearly amplifying medium with an inhomogeneously broadened gain profile. It is shown that a pulse can be compressed considerably during amplification. Conditions are established under which strong distortions of the pulse shape may result in its splitting. An analysis is made of the influence of the phase self-modulation of radiation on the shape of ultrashort light pulses in oscillators and amplifiers.

Impact of Phase-Sensitive-Amplifier’s Mode Structure on Amplified Image Quality

Muthiah Annamalai, Michael Vasilyev, Prem Kumar

We study phase-sensitive image pre-amplification versus pumping conditions and number of signal modes. We see image improvement by pre-amplification, and high-spatial-frequency enhancement for “higher-order-pump,” “nonzero-wavevector-mismatch” cases.

Deflection of a light beam in an inhomogeneously amplifying medium

V P Konarev, I. N. Matveev, Vladimir Protopopov

A theoretical analysis is made of the propagation of a monochromatic beam of arbitrary form through an amplifying medium with a coordinate-dependent gain. The Fourier transformation is used to obtain a system of integrodifferential equations for the Fourier components of the field. The results of numerical calculations are given for one specific case.

Quantum fluctuation in traveling-wave amplification of optical images

I. V. Sokolov, Mikhail I. Kolobov, Luigi A. Lugiato

We investigate amplification of optical images by means of a traveling-wave optical parametric amplifier. As shown recently by Kolobov and Lugiato [Phys. Rev. A 52, 4930 (1995)] for a cavity-based geometry, such a scheme can amplify images, without deteriorating their sign-to-noise ratio, thus working as a noiseless amplifier. Here we consider a configuration without cavity, which is more realistic for a possible experimental realization. We investigate in detail the quantum fluctuations of the amplifier and formulate criteria for its noiseless performance. The spatial resolution power, which guarantees noiseless amplification is estimated. We demonstrate how the optimum phase matching of a phase-sensitive wavefront of the image can improve the noise performance of the amplifier and bring it to the ultimate value achievable under given physical conditions. We discuss the effect of improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio in the case of observation of both the input and the amplified image, with an ideal photodetector of small area (i.e., much less than the coherence area of the amplifier). This improvement is due to the fact that the signal-to-noise ratio in the input is deteriorated by the observation with the photodetector of small area.
