Abstract

We investigate the propagation characteristics of the narrowband Stokes/anti-Stokes photons in cold atomic vapor. The four-wave mixing process results from parametric amplification of the anti-Stokes photons. We find that the process of parametric amplification is very similar to the light pulse propagating through an anomalous dispersion gain medium. Finally, we obtain the general solutions of the Glauber biphoton correlation functions, which are in good agreement with the experiment results.

Generation of frequency-correlated narrowband biphotons from four-wave mixing in cold atoms

Sujun Yun, Jianming Wen, Ping Xu +2 more

Generation of frequency-correlated narrowband biphotons from the four-wave mixing process is theoretically analyzed through manipulating optical properties of light propagation inside a cold atomic ensemble. In contrast with the spontaneous parametric down-conversion case, we find a much looser condition, which allows producing such frequency-correlated paired photons. We propose a two-photon temporal conditional correlation measurement to detect these photons. In addition, our results provide other evidence for observing backward pulse propagation from the viewpoint of two-photon correlation measurement.

Interference of a Narrowband Biphoton with Double Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in an N-Type System

Peng Chen, Jun Qian, Dong-Yuan Chen +2 more

We predict the possibility of the interference of narrow-band biphotons generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing with double electromagnetically induced transparency configuration in cold atoms. In an N-type four-level system, an auxiliary optical field Ω m can create double transparency windows for anti-Stokes photons. When the slow light effects in the double transparency windows are very strong, two four-wave mixing channels could exist due to the splitting of the phase matching condition. The biphoton generated from the two four-wave mixing channels can cause interference and shows Rabi oscillations in two-photon correlation. This interference mechanism will complement the understanding of interference at the two-photon level.

Narrowband biphoton generation near atomic resonance

Shengwang Du, Jianming Wen, Morton H. Rubin

Generating nonclassical light offers a benchmark tool for fundamental research and potential applications in quantum optics. Conventionally, it has become a standard technique to produce nonclassical light through the nonlinear optical processes occurring in nonlinear crystals. We describe this process using cold atomic-gas media to generate such nonclassical light, especially focusing on narrowband biphoton generation. Compared with the standard procedure the new biphoton source has such properties as long coherence time, long coherence length, high spectral brightness, and high conversion efficiency. Although there exist two methodologies describing the physical process, we concentrate on the theoretical aspect of the entangled two-photon state produced from the four-wave mixing in a multilevel atomic ensemble using perturbation theory. We show that both linear and nonlinear optical responses to the generated fields play an important role in determining the biphoton waveform and, consequently, on the two-photon temporal correlation. There are two characteristic regimes determined by whether the linear or nonlinear coherence time is dominant. In addition, our model provides a clear physical picture that brings insight into understanding biphoton optics with this new source. We apply our model to recent work on generating narrowband (and even subnatural linewidth) paired photons using the technique of electromagnetically induced transparency and slow-light effect in cold atoms and find good agreement with experimental results.

Slow and stored light in amplifying four way mixing process

B. Zlatković, Aleksandar J. Krmpot, I. S. Radojičić +3 more

We have investigated experimentally and theoretically four-wave mixing (FWM) in hot potassium vapor as a medium for producing slow and store light. Two pump and a single probe photon were mixed in double-Λ system, characterized by parametric amplification of coupled co-propagating probe and conjugate beams. We have observed very high gains of probe and conjugate, up to 60 and 80 respectively, at two photon Raman resonance, under large one photon detuning, and high K-cell temperature. Using an amplifying medium to alleviate the absorption and distortion of propagating pulses are important for slow-light propagation. We observed ultraslow propagation of probe and conjugate pulses under conditions when parametric amplification of twin beams is well below their maximum values. A fractional delays of close to 5 at a gain ∼1.5, for the probe pulse of 20 ns, have been achieved simultaneously for both probe and accompanying conjugate pulse. FWM mixing process under conditions of the experiment results in broadening of twin beams, close to observed delays.

Slow light propagation and amplification via electromagnetically induced transparency and four-wave mixing in an optically dense atomic vapor

Nathaniel B. Phillips, Alexey Vyacheslavovich Gorshkov, Irina V. Novikova

We experimentally and theoretically analyze the propagation of weak-signal field pulses under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in hot Rb vapor, and study the effects of resonant four-wave mixing (FWM). In particular, we demonstrate that in a double-Λ system, formed by the strong control field with the weak resonant signal and a far-detuned Stokes field, both continuous-wave spectra and pulse propagation dynamics for the signal field depend strongly on the amplitude of the seeded Stokes field, and the effect is enhanced in optically dense atomic medium. We also show that the theory describing the coupled propagation of the signal and Stokes fields is in good agreement with the experimental observations.

Biphoton generation enhanced by nonlocal nonlinearity via Rydberg interactions

Hui-Min Zhao, Xiaojun Zhang, M. Artoni +2 more

Strongly correlated Stokes and anti-Stokes photon pairs (biphotons) exhibiting very large generation rates and spectral brightnesses could be attained at extremely low pump powers and optical depths. This is realized via spontaneous four-wave mixing in cold atoms with enhanced nonlocal (Rydberg) optical nonlinearities and prepared into a dark state with a large population imbalance. The scheme works with all light fields on resonance yet with negligible linear absorption and Raman gain.
