Reduction of Pure Dephasing Rates of Excitons by Population Decay in Quantum-Dot Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers

Abstract

Population decay (real transition) and pure dephasing (virtual transition) determine the dephasing rates of excitons in quantum-dot (QD) semiconductor optical amplifiers. In previous theoretical studies, population-decay and pure dephasing are usually handled separately. In this paper, the theory of exciton dephasing in an InAs/GaAs QD semiconductor optical amplifier is presented to elucidate the combination of population decay and pure dephasing and determine the total dephasing rate. The proposed model extends the classical independent boson model to include the effects of real transition. Results show that population decay decreases the pure dephasing rate and imply that the former is directly coupled to pure dephasing despite their differences. Our theoretical results are consistent with the reported experimental phenomena.

Pure dephasing induced by exciton-phonon interactions in GaAs quantum dots

Hailin Wang, Xudong Fan, T. Takagahara +1 more

Summary form only given. We report studies of exciton dephasing in quantum dot (QD)-like islands in narrow GaAs quantum wells (QWs). Using three pulse transient four-wave mixing (FWM), we compare dephasing rates directly with population decay rates. This comparison reveals a pure dephasing process that dominates excitonic dephasing at elevated temperatures but does not involve exciton population relaxation.

Phonon Dephasing of the Exciton in InAs / GaAs Quantum Dots

Andrzej Janutka, Lucjan Jacak, J. Krasnyj +1 more

The interaction of a exciton confined in a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) with bulk phonons (acoustical and optical) responsible for the exciton dephasing is studied. The decoherence of the exciton due to the creation of a polaron with long-living or decaying phonons is described. Characteristic dephasing times for an InAs / GaAs QD are estimated using Green function methods in order to determine fundamental time limitations for use of the QD exciton in quantum information processing.

Exciton relaxation and dephasing in quantum-dot amplifiers from room to cryogenic temperature

Paola Borri, W. Langbein, Stephan Schneider +4 more

We present an extensive experimental study of the exciton relaxation and dephasing in InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) in the temperature range from 10 K to 295 K. The QDs are embedded in the active region of an electrically pumped semiconductor optical amplifier. Ultrafast four-wave mixing and differential transmission spectroscopy on the dot ground-state transition are performed with a sensitive heterodyne detection technique. The importance of the population relaxation dynamics to the dephasing is determined as a function of injection current and temperature. Above 150 K dephasing processes much faster than the population relaxation are present, due to both carrier-phonon scattering and Coulomb interaction with the injected carriers. Only at low temperatures (<30 K) does population relaxation of multiexcitons in the gain regime fully determine the dephasing.

Reducing pure dephasing of quantum bits by collective encoding in quantum dot arrays

Anna Grodecka, Paweł Machnikowski, Lucjan Jacak

We show that phonon-induced pure dephasing of an excitonic (charge) quantum bit in a quantum dot (QD) may be reduced by collective encoding of logical qubits in QD arrays. We define the logical qubit on an array of 2, 4 and 8 QDs, connecting the logical |0⟩ state with the presence of excitons in the appropriately chosen half of dots and the logical |1⟩ state with the other half of the dots occupied. We give quantitative estimates of the resulting total error of a single qubit operation for an InAs/GaAs system.

Exciton dephasing in strain-compensated self-assembled InAs quantum dots

Junko Ishi‐Hayase, Kouichi Akahane, Naokatsu Yamamoto +3 more

We investigate the dephasing of excitons in InAs self-assembled quantum dots by using a transient four-wave-mixing technique. A used sample is specially designed to compensate the strain. We observe long-lived coherence of excitons at 5 K which corresponds to the dephasing time longer than a nanosecond, where the photon energy of the excitation pulse is 0.874~eV. We find that a pure dephasing due to exciton-phonon interactions dominates in the exciton dephasing rather than the population decay and the exciton-exciton interaction in the weak excitation region, by analyzing the population lifetime and the polarization-dependent dephasing time.

Theory of relaxation and decoherence of intersublevel transitions in semiconductor quantum dots

Thomas Grange, R. Ferreira, G. Bastard

We present calculations of intersublevel population and phase relaxation in semiconductor quantum dots. Anharmonic polaron decay is shown to be responsible for population relaxation over a large spectral range. Additional pure dephasing processes are caused by acoustic phonons, which cause the appearance of peaked sidebands and induce broadening through real and virtual transitions between the excited states.
