Eigenvalue problem of the Liouvillian of open quantum systems

Abstract

It is argued that the Liouvillian that appears in the Liouville-von Neumann equation for open quantum systems can have complex eigenvalues. Attention is paid to the question whether the Liouvillian has an eigenvalue that are not given by the difference of the two Hamiltonian eigenvalues.

Schrödinger Equation for an Open System

Bi Qiao, Harry E. Ruda

We present a Schrödinger (Liouville) type of equation for a quantum open system. It has a correlated part, and various master equations may be its special cases. It also has significant applications for constructing decoherence-free subspace for quantum computation. It is related to the original Schrödinger (Liouville) equation for the total system through a non-unitary similarity transformation. It is unnecessary for its correlated part to be self-adjoint, so there is a complex spectrum for the corresponding Hamiltonian (Liouvillian), which enables the time evolution of states to be asymmetric. This shows just the correlation to produce evolution of world.

The spectrum of the Liouville–von Neumann operator in the Hilbert–Schmidt space

Ioannis E. Antoniou, Stanislav Shkarin, Z. Suchanecki

The singular continuous spectrum of the Liouville operator of quantum statistical physics is, in general, properly included in the difference of the spectral values of the singular continuous spectrum of the associated Hamiltonian. The absolutely continuous spectrum of the Liouvillian may arise from a purely singular continuous Hamiltonian. We provide the correct formulas for the spectrum of the Liouville operator and show that the decaying states of the singular continuous subspace of the Hamiltonian do not necessarily contribute to the absolutely continuous subspace of the Liouvillian.

On the Liouville–von Neumann Equation for Unbounded Hamiltonians

Davide Lonigro, Alexander Hahn, Daniel Klaus Burgarth

The evolution of mixed states of a closed quantum system is described by a group of evolution superoperators whose infinitesimal generator (the quantum Liouville superoperator, or Liouvillian) determines the mixed-state counterpart of the Schrödinger equation: the Liouville–von Neumann equation. When the state space of the system is infinite-dimensional, the Liouville superoperator is unbounded whenever the corresponding Hamiltonian is. In this paper, we provide a rigorous, pedagogically-oriented, and self-contained introduction to the quantum Liouville formalism in the presence of unbounded operators. We present and discuss a characterization of the domain of the Liouville superoperator originally due to M. Courbage; starting from that, we develop some simpler characterizations of the domain of the Liouvillian and its square. We also provide, with explicit proofs, some domains of essential selfadjointness (cores) of the Liouvillian.

Dynamical Accessibility in the Control of Quantum Systems

Walter F. Buell, B. A. Shadwick

We discuss the general question of dynamical accessibility among mixed quantum states from the perspective of conservation of kinematic invariants of the Liouville-von Neumann equation and invariants associated with dynamical symmetries of the evolution Hamiltonian.

Non-Hermitian Quantum Physics of Open Systems

I. Rotter

Information on quantum systems can be obtained only when they are open (or opened) in relation to a certain environment. As a matter of fact, realistic open quantum systems appear in very different shape. We sketch the theoretical description of open quantum systems by means of a projection operator formalism elaborated many years ago, and applied by now to the description of different open quantum systems. The Hamiltonian describing the open quantum system is non-Hermitian. Most studied are the eigenvalues of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian of many-particle systems embedded in one environment. We point to the unsolved problems of this method when applied to the description of realistic many-body systems. We then underline the role played by the eigenfunctions of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. Very interesting results originate from the fluctuations of the eigenfunctions in systems with gain and loss of excitons. They occur with an efficiency of nearly 100\%. An example is the photosynthesis.

Solutions of Koopman-von Neumann equations, their superpositions, and uncertainties

Mustafa Amin, Mark A. Walton

The so-called Koopman-von Neumann (KvN) formulation brings classical mechanics to Hilbert space, but many techniques familiar from quantum mechanics remain missing. We use the gauge freedom of the KvN equation to derive separable solutions of the KvN equation, and by extension the classical Liouville equation. The canonical ensemble solution of statistical mechanics is shown to arise from separable solutions. We discuss the Hermiticity of the Liouvillian operator, and treat a case where its spectrum is discrete. Finally, we analyze an uncertainty relation between the so-called dynamical time and the Liouvillian, and argue that such a relation is natural and can be understood entirely within a classical framework.
