Observation of hyperfine structure and isotope shift in autoionizing states

R. J. de Graaff, Erwin A. J. M. Bente, W. Hogervorst +1 more

We report the first observation of hyperfine structure and isotope shift in autoionizing states. This structure was investigated in the $5{d}_{\frac{3}{2}}\mathrm{nf} J=4,5(n=36\ensuremath{-}40)$ barium Rydberg series, excited from the recently localized metastable $5{d}^{2}^{1}G_{4}$ level. An isotope-selective detection method was used in a cw laser spectroscopic experiment on a collimated atomic beam. The experimental data provide valuable additional information for the analyses of these doubly excited series.

Separation of isotopes by laser deflection of atomic beam. I. Barium

Anthony F. Bernhardt, D. E. Duerre, J. R. Simpson +1 more

Spatial separation of isotopes of barium in an atomic beam has been demonstrated, using radiation pressure of light from a tunable dye laser which resolved the unusually narrow isotopic hyperfine structure of the Ba (I) 5535.7-Å resonance line. Observations of the deflected monoisotopic beam indicate an average of 25 photons scattered per atom in the deflected beam.

g Factors of the 6s5d Configuration of Atomic Barium

Gilbert O. Brink, Robert J. Hull

The four metastable states of atomic barium comprising the $6s5d$ configuration have been studied by atomic-beam magnetic resonance, and information concerning their $g$ factors has been obtained. Data from this work agree with that obtained recently by v. Oppen using a different method, and agreement is also obtained with theory.
