Abstract

We have developed a single polarization engineering model of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) Band 10 (0.78–0.95 THz) receivers. The front-end optics comprises a pair of ellipsoidal mirrors and a corrugated feed horn. A waveguide mixer block is attached to the feed horn in which an NbTiN-based superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) mixer chip, which uses a quartz substrate, is mounted onto a WR-1.2 full-height waveguide. The SIS mixer employs two Nb / AlO x / Nb junctions and an NbTiN/SiO 2 /Al microstrip tuning circuit. A very wide intermediate frequency (IF) system with a bandwidth of 4–12 GHz is employed. The receiver demonstrated double-sideband (DSB) noise temperatures of below 240 K at local oscillator (LO) frequencies ranging from 792 to 945 GHz, without any correction for loss in front of the receiver. The lowest DSB receiver noise temperature, 179 K, was obtained at the center frequency of the designed band, which corresponds to about 4 quanta. These results represent state-of-the-art sensitivity for a receiver at an operating physical temperature of 4 K.

A total of 73 dual polarization superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) receivers for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have been successfully produced to observe astronomical signals in the 787-950 GHz frequency band. The receivers use two double sideband (DSB) waveguide mixers with Nb/AlOx/Nb tunnel junctions and NbTiN/SiO2/Al microstrip tuning circuits on quartz substrate. The best achieved DSB receiver noise temperature is 125 K, corresponding to about 3 hf/kBfor 4 K operation.

Design and Development of SIS Mixers for ALMA Band 10

Wenlei Shan, Sheng‐Cai Shi, T. Matsunaga +4 more

We present the design and preliminary experimental results of superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers for Atacama large millimeter array (ALMA) band 10 (780-950GHz) receivers. To achieve wide frequency coverage as well as low noise temperature, we integrated high current density (10 kA/cm2) and small-sized (one micrometer in diameter) Nb/AlOx/Nb SIS junctions with a tuning microstrip line using NbTiN ground plane and Al wiring layers. High quality NbTiN films with Tc reaching 14.5 K and Al films with residual resistivity ratio as large as 15 have been achieved. To minimize the waveguide transmission loss and facilitate the fabrication of mixer block, a full height waveguide was adopted. The waveguide probe was optimized to achieve low input impedance in the frequency range of 780-950 GHz while adopting a backshort cavity of zero depth. Preliminary RF testing with a Nb/Al microstrip tuning circuit demonstrated a DSB receiver noise temperature about 400 K at 832.5 GHz, which promises the accommodation of receiver performance in ALMA specification with low loss NbTiN/Al microstrip lines.

Design and Development of SIS Mixers for ALMA Band 8

Wenlei Shan, Takashi Noguchi, S. C. Shi +1 more

In this paper, we report on the design and experimental results of a fix-tuned Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) mixer for Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) band 8 (385-500 GHz) receivers. Nb-based SIS junctions of a current density of 10 kA/cm/sup 2/ and one micrometer size (fabricated with a two-step lift-off process) are employed to accomplish the ALMA receiver specification, which requires wide frequency coverage as well as low noise temperature. Parallel-connected twin junctions (PCTJ) are designed to resonate at the band center to tune out the junction geometric capacitance. A waveguide-microstrip probe is optimized to have nearly frequency-independent impedance at the probe's feed point, thereby making it much easier to match the low-impedance PCTJ over a wide frequency band. In addition, a superconducting magnet fixed onto the compact mixer block to provide efficient magnetic field coupling is designed. The SIS mixer demonstrates a minimum double-sideband receiver noise temperature of 108 K at the band center and temperatures of less than 167 K over the whole band (for an intermediate-frequency range of 4-8 GHz).

Design Of Dual Polarisation Sideband Separation Mixer For ALMA Band 5

Bhushan Billade

This licentiate is focused on the design and development of Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) junction mixer for ALMA Band 5, one of the ten frequency bands of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) project. ALMA Band 5 is a dual polarisation sideband separation heterodyne receiver covering radio frequencies (RF) from 163 GHz to 211 GHz, with 4-8 GHz intermediate frequency (IF). Amongst the other ALMA bands, Band 5 is the lowest frequency band, which uses all-cold optics. That puts strong constrains on the dimensions of all the receiver components. For the SIS mixer, we employ a MMIC-like approach where most of the DSB mixer components, including LO injection circuitry with novel directional coupler, are integrated on the same crystal quartz substrate. The mixer uses a lumped filter technique to extract the IF frequencies, which is non-traditional for SIS mixers. A custom made superconducting Lange coupler with suspended air bridges to connect the fingers of Lange coupler is used. Experimental measurements of the double sideband mixer show state of the art performance with the receiver noise temperature below 30 Kelvin across the entire band. The noise temperature for sideband separation mixer is below 60 Kelvin with sideband rejection better than 12 dB over most of the band.

A 385-500 GHz Low Noise Superconductor-Insulator- Superconductor Mixer for ALMA Band 8

We demonstrate here a minimum double-sideband receiver noise temperature of 3 times of quantum limits for an intermediate-frequency range of 4-8 GHz. The mixers were measured in band 8 cartridge with a sideband separation scheme. Single-sideband receiver noise below ALMA specification was achieved over the whole band.

SIS Mixer Fabrication for ALMA Band10

M. Kroug, Akira Endo, T. Tamura +6 more

Band10 of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) is a planned heterodyne receiver covering the frequency range 790 GHz-950 GHz. The waveguide mixers are superconductor insulator superconductor (SIS) Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb junctions integrated with NbTiN/SiO2/Al tuning circuits. Our junction definition process has been greatly simplified by introducing an inductively-coupled-plasma (ICP) etcher to the fabrication. The etching process, which employs a low-pressure CF4/O2plasma, allows to remove the entire Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb tri-layer in asinglestep. SIS mixers with current densities up to 10 kA/cm2and quality factor above 15 have been fabricated with good reproducibility. Minimum receiver noise temperature, corrected for optical losses, is 210 K at 860 GHz. With the goal to further improve the performance, optimization of circuit design and fabrication technology are discussed.
