Abstract

We study the effect of finite atomic lifetimes on a micromaser from temporal evolution. A stream of finite-lifetime two-level atoms is injected inside a cavity in a coherent superposition of their upper and lower levels. We study the effect of the atomic decay on the generation of quasipure states of the inner electromagnetic field. First, we study the stationary photon number distribution when the atoms are injected in their upper level. We compare our results with previous calculations by Zhu, Wang, and Fearn [Phys. Rev. A 44, 737 (1991)]. We find that quasinumber states can be generated for a long time, in a range of physical parameters that allows their experimental realization. Second, we investigate the effect of finite atomic lifetimes on the generation of cotangent states, and we study their squeezing properties.

Generation of macroscopic superpositions in a micromaser

John J. Slosser, Pierre Meystre, Ewan M. Wright

At low temperatures steady-state macroscopic superpositions can be generated in the field of a micromaser pumped by a stream of two-level atoms injected in a coherent superposition of their upper and lower states. The onset of these superpositions resembles a second-order phase transition, with the control parameter being the ratio of the atomic injection rate to the cavity damping rate.

Generation of pure states in a two-photon micromaser: Effects of finite detuning and cavity losses

Miguel Orszag, Luis Roa, R. Ramírez

In this paper, we study the generation of pure states in a two-photon micromaser with finite detuning of the intermediate atomic level. This study was done via the temporal evolution of the discrete master equation. We show that it is possible to generate the ideal squeezed vacuum for a broad range of detunings in a lossless cavity and away from the trapping condition. We also consider the effect of cavity losses.

Dynamics of a coherently driven micromaser.

John J. Slosser

This dissertation considers both a lossless and a dissipative micromaser in which a monoenergetic beam of two-level atoms in a coherent superposition of their upper and lower states is injected inside a single mode, high-Q cavity. In the lossless case, we find that under appropriate conditions a field initially in a mixed state will evolve to previously unknown pure states, which we call the tangent and cotangent states. In various limits, these states exhibit interesting properties such as sub-Poissonian photon statistics and squeezing, and most importantly they acquire the characteristics of "macroscopic" quantum superpositions. When dissipation of the cavity mode is incorporated into the model, we find that although the field no longer evolves to a pure state, the mixed steady-state field may still retain the properties of a macroscopic superposition under experimentally realizable damping rates. We then evaluate the experimental conditions necessary for the preparation and detection of such macroscopic superpositions.

Tangent and cotangent states of the electromagnetic field

John J. Slosser, Pierre Meystre

We consider a lossless micromaser in which a monoenergetic, low-density beam of two-level atoms in a coherent superposition of their upper and lower states is injected inside a single-mode high-Q cavity. This is a realization of a harmonic oscillator driven by a quantum current. We find that under appropriate conditions the field may evolve to pure states, which we call tangent and cotangent states, even for mixed-state initial conditions. In various limits, they exhibit nonclassical properties such as sub-Poissonian photon statistics, or even more interestingly acquire the characteristics of ``macroscopic'' quantum superpositions. The conditions under which these states are reached, as well as the dynamical approach of the system to steady state, are discussed in detail.

On single-mode - and V-type micromasers: quantum interference versus photon statistics

Si-de Du, Yoshitaka Tanimura

Quantum interference effects are theoretically investigated in the steady-state photon statistics of single-mode Λ- and V-type micromasers with injected three-level atoms in a superposition of their internal states. The two lower (upper) levels are nondegenerate and coherent in a general case. For the Λ-type case, we have discussed how detunings affect the photon statistics of the noninversion micromaser. Under the proper conditions strongly sub-Poissonian field states with a large number of photons can be easily produced in this novel micromaser even if there exists no coherence between the two lower levels. For the V-type case, we have analysed how the photon statistics changes with the increase of the ground-state population. Although the generation of the strongly sub-Poissonian states is always possible in the micromaser under the noninversion case, their photon intensities become very weak compared to the Λ-type case. Our results indicate that it is perfectly possible to experimentally realize a noninversion micromaser with strongly sub-Poissonian statistics in the Λ-type system.

INFLUENCE OF CAVITY LOSS ON GENERATION OF STEADY STATE FOURTH-ORDER AND SQUARED AMPLITUDE SQUEEZING IN MICROMASER

Li Fu-Li, 西安交通大学应用物理系,西安710049

The generation of the steady state fourth-order squeezing and squared amplitude squeezing in a micromaser by the coherent trapping approach is investigated. The results show that if two-level atoms injected into the cavity are initially in coherent state and the flight time of the atoms inside the cavity satisfies the trapping condition, the field can evolve into a coherent trapping state which exhibits steady state fourth-order squeezing and squared amplitude squeezing in the cavity as long as the flux of the atoms is moderately large.
