Abstract

A generalised low-density parity-check code (GLDPC) is a low-density parity-check code in which the constraint nodes of the code's graph are replaced with component or subcodes other than single parity checks. Gallager's bit-flipping algorithm for LDPCs is generalised to the class of GLDPCs with Hamming subcodes. The proposed weighted bit-flip voting (WBFV) method is iterative and uses only the hard decision decoder of the Hamming subcodes. Decoding of Hamming-based GLDPCs using WBFV has been simulated on the binary symmetric channel. Simulation results are presented showing the variation in performance with voting rule, graph construction and block length. In terms of the dependence of coding gains and complexity on the GLDPC block length, the proposed method is found to display a good performance to decoding complexity trade-off. Performance is found to compete well with other more conventional hard decision decoding schemes.

Improved Weighted Bit Flip Voting decoding algorithm for generalized LDPC

Yibin Yang, Jintao Li, Hui Ling Yu +1 more

A generalized low-density parity-check code (GLDPC) is a low-density parity-check code in which the constraint nodes of the code's graph are replaced with a small linear block code referred to as the constituent code other than single parity checks. For the optical system or ultra-high speed wireless data transfer system, it is hard to gain soft LLRs which need to be supplied by ultra-high speed A/D converters, so the hard decision decoder is important for these systems. Similar with Gallager's bit-flipping algorithm for LDPC, the Weighted Bit Flip Voting (WBFV) algorithm has been proposed to decode GLDPC with only the hard decision which proved to be good performance. But the finding of max vote in the algorithm is intractability for the hardware implementation. If we find the max from thousands of data (code length is usually thousands) serially, thousands of cycles needed result to large latency; a lot of compare modules needed for parallel finding of the max, result to large resource. In this paper, we proposed an improved and simplified WBFV algorithm which without max voting finding is easy for hardware implementation. The proposed improved algorithm not only has no performance loss, but also speeds up the iteration convergence. Then we proposed a full parallel GLDPC decoder design for our algorithm with very low complexity.

Symbol-Flipping Based Decoding of Generalized Low-Density Parity-Check Coded Constructed over GF(q)

F-C. Kuo, Lajos Hanzo

An efficient symbol-flipping based decoding algorithm designed for nonbinary Generalized Low-Density Parity-Check (GLDPC) codes is proposed. By extending the concept of the Weighted Bit Flip Voting (WBFV) algorithm designed for binary Hamming-code based GLDPC codes, the symbol-flipping decoding algorithm can be beneficially employed for decoding the family of GLDPC codes constructed from nonbinary constituent codes, such as nonbinary Bose Chaudhuri Hocquenghem (BCH) codes or Reed Solomon (RS) codes. The simulation results demonstrate that improvements of 1 dB and 2.7 dB are achieved by the proposed coding scheme in comparison to the more conventional binary GLDPC codes using the WBFV decoding algorithm, when using the Galois Field GF(32) for communicating over AWGN and uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels, respectively.

Improved Bit-Flipping Method for Decoding Structured Low-Density Parity-Check Codes

Meiling Zhang

An improved bit-flipping(BF) algorithm with low complexity for decoding structured low-density parity-check codes(LDPC) is proposed to improve the performance of the hard-decision BF algorithm. The hard-decision bits are divided into two groups based on the magnitudes of the received symbols, and at each iteration, the proposed algorithm can flip more than one bit with using two thresholds, and the flipping error probability is effectively decreased. The improved BF algorithm requires some real number comparisons before iterations and requires only logical operations during the iterations.Compared with the weighted bit-flipping algorithm and its modifications, the new method is with significantly lower complexity.Simulations show that the proposed algorithm is provided with very fast convergence speed and excellent performance with significantly low complexity.

Low-complexity decoding of LDPC codes using reduced-set WBF-based algorithms

Sadjad Haddadi, Mahmoud Farhang, Mostafa Derakhtian

Abstract We propose a method to substantially reduce the computational complexity of iterative decoders of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes which are based on the weighted bit-flipping (WBF) algorithm. In this method, the WBF-based decoders are modified so that the flipping function is calculated only over a reduced set of variable nodes. An explicit expression for the achieved complexity gain is provided and it is shown that for a code of block length N, the decoding complexity is reduced from O(N2) to O(N). Moreover, we derive an upper bound for the difference in the frame error rate of the reduced-set decoders and the original WBF-based decoders, and it is shown that the error performances of the two decoders are essentially the same.

Generalized LDPC codes and generalized stopping sets

N. Miladinovic, M.P.C. Fossorier

A generalized low-density parity check code (GLDPC) is a low-density parity check code in which the constraint nodes of the code graph are block codes, rather than single parity checks. In this paper, we study GLDPC codes which have BCH or Reed-Solomon codes as subcodes under bounded distance decoding (BDD). The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated in the limit case of an infinite length (cycle free) code used over a binary erasure channel (BEC) and the corresponding thresholds for iterative decoding are derived. The performance of the proposed scheme for finite code lengths over a BEC is investigated as well. Structures responsible for decoding failures are defined and a theoretical analysis over the ensemble of GLDPC codes which yields exact bit and block error rates of the ensemble average is derived. Unfortunately this study shows that GLDPC codes do not compare favorably with their LDPC counterpart over the BEC. Fortunately, it is also shown that under certain conditions, objects identified in the analysis of GLDPC codes over a BEC and the corresponding theoretical results remain useful to derive tight lower bounds on the performance of GLDPC codes over a binary symmetric channel (BSC). Simulation results show that the proposed method yields competitive performance with a good decoding complexity trade-off for the BSC.
