Abstract

Excited mercury atoms in an electrodeless discharge are exposed to high-power radiation at 5289 Å obtained by frequency-doubling the output of a Q-switched Nd : glass laser. A very weak line is detected at 4250 Å and described to a Raman transition from the 63 P2 to the 63 P1 state.

Isotopically selective photoionization of mercury atoms

P. L. Dyer, George C. Baldwin, Carter Kittrell +2 more

Isotopically selective resonance ionization of mercury atoms has been accomplished by three-step excitation via the 6 3P1 and 8 1S0 excited states. Three collinear beams, respectively 254, 286, and 532 nm, from two dye lasers and a pulsed neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (ND:YAG) pump laser, were passed through a closed mercury vapor cell containing electrodes to which the ions were drawn by an electric field. The ion current and the 254-nm fluorescence radiation were measured as a function of laser wavelengths. Hyperfine structures for the 254- and 286-nm transitions were observed.

Observation of high efficiency of Raman scattering in the process of the three-photon ionization of samarium atom

Aleksandr I. Gomonai

Very high efficiency of Raman scattering on samarium atoms in the process of three-photon ionization has been detected. An intense maximum attributed to the one-photon transition 4f 65d6s 9 H 2 → 4f 55d6s 2 7 D 3° between two excited states is observed in the dependence of the yield of Sm+ ions on the laser-radiation frequency. The 4f 65d6s 9 H 2 state is populated owing to the spontaneous Raman scattering 4f 66s 2 7 F 3 + ω − ν → 4f 65d6s 9 H 2.

Laser-Induced Quenching of Metastable Deuterium Atoms. Singly Stimulated Two-Photon Emission and Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering

P. Bräunlich, R. J. Hall, P. Lambropoulos

An experimental arrangement for the measurement of singly stimulated two-photon emission and anti-Stokes Raman scattering from metastable deuterium atoms is described. The atoms, produced by charge exchange between cesium vapor and 5-keV deuterons, are subjected to intense light pulses from a Nd-glass laser. The generated photons are detected at the exit slit of a vacuum-uv spectrometer. The results are compared with theoretical calculations by Zernik.
