Abstract

The following spectra of LiYF4:Nd have been observed for the first time: (i) the electronic and electron-phonor Raman spectra of the stark sub-levels Y1-Y6 of energy levels 4I11/2 excited by 4880? Ar+ laser beam; (ii) two-photon fluorescence and electron-phonor spectra excited by 6943? ruby laser beam.

One- and two-photon spectra of Nd3+clusters in CaF2and SrF2crystals

Tasoltan T. Basiev, В. В. Воронов, M. Yu. Glotova +2 more

The polarised two-photon (IR) and one-photon (visible) luminescence excitation spectra of Nd 3+ nanoclusters in CaF 2 and SrF 2 crystals are measured at 10 K using a :LiF colour centre laser tunable in spectral ranges 1090 — 1230 nm and 545 — 615 nm with an emission linewidth of ~0.02 — 0.03 cm -1 , an average output power of ~55 mW, and a pulse repetition rate of 10 Hz. The two-photon excitation spectra at the 4 I 9/2 → 4 G 5/2 transition reveal the structure, which is absent upon one-photon excitation, which can be explained by different selection rules for some Stark — Stark transitions upon one- and two-photon absorption.

OFF-RESONANCE ELECTRONIC RAMAN SCATTERING OF FREQUENCY-DOUBLED Nd LASER RADIATION BY EXCITED MERCURY ATOMS

Peter Platz

Excited mercury atoms in an electrodeless discharge are exposed to high-power radiation at 5289 Å obtained by frequency-doubling the output of a Q-switched Nd : glass laser. A very weak line is detected at 4250 Å and described to a Raman transition from the 63 P2 to the 63 P1 state.

LINE NARROWING CAPABILITIES OF Nd3+ PAIRS IN LiYF4

Jean‐Claude Vial, R.B. Barthem, F. Madéore

Pairs of Nd3+ ions in LiYF4 are used to test the correlation between the inhomogeneous distributions of the two successive transitions needed for their double excitation. The experimental line shape and line intensities are well accounted for by a single model. We measure a small homogeneous linewidth which can be connected to the lifetime of the excited levels.

Experimental and theoretical investigations of the 4ƒ^2→ 4ƒ5d ground-state and excited-state absorption spectra of Pr^3+ in LiYF_4

Mathieu Laroche, J.L. Doualan, Sylvain Girard +2 more

Near-UV excited-state absorption spectra obtained with a pulsed pump–probe technique were recorded in LiYF4:Pr3+ at 77 and at 8 K and revealed a detailed structure of the 4f2 1D2→4f5d and 4f2 (3P0+1I6)→4f5d optical transitions. These experimental results, together with those previously obtained at room temperature, are compared with the numerical predictions of a full calculation of the 4f5d sublevels and of the electric dipole transitions toward these sublevels from different states of the 4f2 configuration. The agreement is good, provided that the four adjustable parameters of the theory are taken as B20(5d)=7290 cm-1,B40(5d)=-14 900 cm-1,F0=60 557 cm-1, and 〈r〉fd=0.245 Å. The level structure of the 4f5d configuration of LiYF4:Pr3+ is shown to be dominated, as expected, by the crystal field coupling of the 5d electron but also, to a noticeable extent, by the spin–orbit coupling of the 4f electron and the Coulomb repulsion of both electrons. The former of these two interactions is somewhat more efficient than the latter in the low-energy part of the 4f5d configuration, i.e., in the spectral region where the largest amount of experimental data is currently available.
