Dark-state polariton in magnetized plasma under electromagnetically induced transparency

Abstract

This paper derives a wave equation in magnetized plasma under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) regime for probe electron cyclotron wave. The equation has a solution indicating a state analogous to “dark-state polaritons” [M. Fleischhauer and M. D. Lukin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5094 (2000)] in quantum atomic system. The state analogous to dark-state polaritons is a propagating coupled state of the probe-wave electric field and longitudinal plasma oscillation. The propagation of the coupled state can be stopped as its waveform is maintained if injection of pump wave is properly controlled in time domain. The “stop-light” is achieved by adiabatic transition from a state in which the probe-wave field is dominant to a state in which the longitudinal plasma oscillation is dominant. This study also recaptures a phenomenon analogous to “coherent population trap” in conventional EIT of quantum atomic system.

Control of photon propagation via electromagnetically induced transparency in lossless media

L. He, Yu-xi Liu, S. Yi +2 more

We study the influence of a lossless material medium on the coherent storage and quantum-state transfer of a quantized probe light in an ensemble of $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type atoms. The medium is modeled as uniformly distributed two-level atoms with the same energy level spacing, coupling to a probe light. This coupled system can be simplified to a collection of two-mode polaritons which couple to one transition of the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type atoms. We show that, when the other transition of $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type atoms is controlled by a classical light, electromagnetically induced transparency can also occur for the polaritons. In this case the coherent storage and quantum transfer for photon states are achievable through novel dark states with respect to the polaritons. By calculating the corresponding dispersion relation, we find that the ensemble of three-level atoms with $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type transitions may serve as quantum memory for it slows or even stops light propagation through the mechanism of electromagnetically induced transparency.

Dark-State Polaritons in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

Michael Fleischhauer, Mikhail D. Lukin

We identify form-stable coupled excitations of light and matter ("dark-state polaritons") associated with the propagation of quantum fields in electromagnetically induced transparency. The properties of dark-state polaritons such as the group velocity are determined by the mixing angle between light and matter components and can be controlled by an external coherent field as the pulse propagates. In particular, light pulses can be decelerated and "trapped" in which case their shape and quantum state are mapped onto metastable collective states of matter. Possible applications of this reversible coherent-control technique are discussed.

Solitons formed by dark-state polaritons in an electromagnetic induced transparency

Xiong-Jun Liu, Hui Jing, Mo‐Lin Ge

We show the possible stable soliton generation for the dark-state polaritons in an electromagnetically induced transparency medium composed of $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type atoms. Whether the solitons are dark or bright can be controlled by the coupling field intensity and the one-photon detuning of the probe field. The velocity, spatial, and time widths of the solitons can also be adjusted by the coupling light.

Bloch oscillations of polaritons of an atomic ensemble in magnetic fields

H. R. Zhang, C. P. Sun

We study a washboard potential in a light-driven ensemble of three-level atoms induced by the externally applied magnetic fields under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We find that a dark-state polariton, which is formed by an atomic ensemble dressed by the photon can display a typical quantum interference effect (i.e., the quasiparticle Bloch oscillation). The dark-state polariton is subjected to a washboard configuration potential with a spatially uniform force and a periodic potential provided by the linearly and periodically external magnetic fields, respectively. Due to the slower group velocity of the photons in the EIT medium, the period of Bloch oscillation can achieve a millisecond order of magnitude. Also, in our protocol, the Bloch oscillation of the dark-state polariton is feasibly modulated through the applied control and magnetic fields.

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Nguyen Huy Bang, Minh Dong Hoang, Van Doai Le +2 more

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such medium, i.e., the EIT effect is established. Under EIT conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state. Quantum memory for photons: Dark-state polaritons

Michael Fleischhauer, Mikhail D. Lukin

An ideal and reversible transfer technique for the quantum state between light and metastable collective states of matter is presented and analyzed in detail. The method is based on the control of photon propagation in coherently driven three-level atomic media, in which the group velocity is adiabatically reduced to zero. Form-stable coupled excitations of light and matter (``dark-state polaritons'') associated with the propagation of quantum fields in electromagnetically induced transparency are identified, their basic properties discussed and their application for quantum memories for light analyzed.
