Experimental Realization of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm Gedankenexperiment : A New Violation of Bell's Inequalities

Abstract

The linear-polarization correlation of pairs of photons emitted in a radiative cascade of calcium has been measured. The new experimental scheme, using two-channel polarizers (i.e., optical analogs of Stern-Gerlach filters), is a straightforward transposition of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm gedankenexperiment. The present results, in excellent agreement with the quantum mechanical predictions, lead to the greatest violation of generalized Bell's inequalities ever achieved.

Bell inequalities and two experimental tests with mercury

Edward S. Fry

Most experimental tests of Bell inequalities have involved measurements of correlations between two photons. One of the first definitive experiments involved the linear polarization correlation between two photons in an atomic cascade of 200 Hg. That experiment is discussed in depth in this paper. The form of the initial state density matrix was a critical part of that experiment; and the experimental and theoretical determination of the density matrix, including finite solid-angle effects is discussed. However, all Bell inequality experiments to date have two widely recognized loopholes, detector efficiency and locality. This paper concludes with a very brief description of an experiment that will close both of these loopholes. In contrast to existing experiments with photons, this new test involves spin correlations between the nuclei of two 199 Hg atoms; it is an exact experimental realization of Bohm's version of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen gedankenexperiment.

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm experiment and Bell inequality violation using Type 2 parametric down conversion

Thomas E. Kiess, Yanhua H. Shih, Alexander V. Sergienko +1 more

We report a new two-photon polarization correlation experiment for realizing the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm (EPRB) state and for testing Bell-type inequalities. We use the pair of orthogonally-polarized light quanta generated in Type 2 parametric down conversion. Using 1 nm interference filters in front of our detectors, we observe from the output of a 0.5mm beta - BaB2O4 (BBO) crystal the EPRB correlations in coincidence counts, and measure an associated Bell inequality violation of 22 standard deviations. The quantum state of the photon pair is a polarization analog of the spin-1/2 singlet state.

Experimental Tests of Realistic Local Theories via Bell's Theorem

Alain Aspect, Philippe Grangier, Gérard Roger

We have measured the linear polarization correlation of the photons emitted in a radiative atomic cascade of calcium. A high-efficiency source provided an improved statistical accuracy and an ability to perform new tests. Our results, in excellent agreement with the quantum mechanical predictions, strongly violate the generalized Bell's inequalities, and rule out the whole class of realistic local theories. No significant change in results was observed with source-polarizer separations of up to 6.5 m.

New Type of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm Experiment Using Pairs of Light Quanta Produced by Optical Parametric Down Conversion

Yanhua H. Shih, C. O. Alley

A pair of correlated light quanta of 532-nm wavelength with the same linear polarization but divergent directions of propagation was produced by nonlinear optical parametric down conversion. Each light quantum was converted to a definite polarization eigenstate and was reflected by a turning mirror to superpose with the other at a beam splitter. For coincident detection at separated detectors, polarization correlations of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm type were observed. We also observed a violation of Bell's inequality by 3 standard deviations.

Experimental Test of Local Hidden-Variable Theories

S. J. Freedman, John F. Clauser

We have measured the linear polarization correlation of the photons emitted in an atomic cascade of calcium. It has been shown by a generalization of Bell's inequality that the existence of local hidden variables imposes restrictions on this correlation in conflict with the predictions of quantum mechanics. Our data, in agreement with quantum mechanics, violate these restrictions to high statistical accuracy, thus providing strong evidence against local hidden-variable theories.
