Abstract

We report a new two-photon polarization correlation experiment for realizing the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm (EPRB) state and for testing Bell-type inequalities. We use the pair of orthogonally-polarized light quanta generated in Type 2 parametric down conversion. Using 1 nm interference filters in front of our detectors, we observe from the output of a 0.5mm beta - BaB2O4 (BBO) crystal the EPRB correlations in coincidence counts, and measure an associated Bell inequality violation of 22 standard deviations. The quantum state of the photon pair is a polarization analog of the spin-1/2 singlet state.

New Type of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm Experiment Using Pairs of Light Quanta Produced by Optical Parametric Down Conversion

Yanhua H. Shih, C. O. Alley

A pair of correlated light quanta of 532-nm wavelength with the same linear polarization but divergent directions of propagation was produced by nonlinear optical parametric down conversion. Each light quantum was converted to a definite polarization eigenstate and was reflected by a turning mirror to superpose with the other at a beam splitter. For coincident detection at separated detectors, polarization correlations of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm type were observed. We also observed a violation of Bell's inequality by 3 standard deviations.

A New Type of EPR Experiment Using Light Quanta Produced by A Nonlinear Optical Process

O Alley

A pair of correlated light quanta of 532 nm wavelength with the same linear polarization but divergent directions of propagation was produced by non-linear optical parametric down conversion in a crystal of deuterated potassium di-hydrogen phosphate from a 100 ps duration laser pulse of 266 nm wavelength. Each light quantum was converted to a circular polarization state or a linear polarization state (orthogonal) and was reflected by a turning mirror to superpose with the other at a beam splitter to produce a two-quantum superposition state. For coincident detection of the two light quanta at separated detectors, correlations of the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen type for the polarizations have been observed as predicted by our analysis. In preliminary runs with limited bata we have measured a violation of Bell's inequality by three standard deviations. We are planning to extend our experiments to include a truly random delayed choice between two analyser settings at each detector while maintaining a spaoelike separation between the detectors.

Experimental Realization of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm Gedankenexperiment : A New Violation of Bell's Inequalities

Alain Aspect, Philippe Grangier, Gérard Roger

The linear-polarization correlation of pairs of photons emitted in a radiative cascade of calcium has been measured. The new experimental scheme, using two-channel polarizers (i.e., optical analogs of Stern-Gerlach filters), is a straightforward transposition of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-Bohm gedankenexperiment. The present results, in excellent agreement with the quantum mechanical predictions, lead to the greatest violation of generalized Bell's inequalities ever achieved.

Experimental tests of Bell’s inequalities based on space-time and spin variables

T. B. Pittman, Yanhua H. Shih, Alexander V. Sergienko +1 more

Coincidence detections are measured between the output ports of a beam splitter whose input is an orthogonally polarized two-photon state produced in type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion. When the delays between the two optical paths leading to each detector are varied by two spatially separated Pockel cells, a two-photon interference effect is seen that highlights a simultaneous entanglement in both spin and space-time variables. In contrast to all previous experimental tests of Bell's in- equalities, which have utilized states entangled with respect to only one type of observable, the double entanglement realized here allows the demonstration of two different types of Bell inequality violations in one experimental setup.

Phase-shifted Bell states

J. J. Joshua Davis, Carey L. Jackman, R. Leonhardt +2 more

Inspired by previous studies and pioneers of the field, we present new results on an extensive Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen (EPR)–Bell experiment using photons generated by parametric down-conversion, where one of the photons is deliberately phase-shifted. Our experiments show some surprising results for particular angles of this phase shift, where, for some states, the Clauser, Horne, Shimony, and Holt inequality shows no violations, requiring us to review our understanding of “entangled” states vis-à-vis the correlations obtained via experimental coincidence counts in agreement with quantum mechanics theoretical predictions. We give some possible explanations about the correlated states that show no violations of these inequalities.
