Optical absorptions of an exciton in a quantum ring: Effect of the repulsive core

Abstract

We study the optical absorptions of an exciton in a quantum ring. The quantum ring is described as a circular quantum dot with a repulsive core. The advantage of our methodology is that one can investigate the influence of the repulsive core by varying two parameters in the confinement potential. The linear, third-order nonlinear and total optical absorption coefficients have been examined with the change of the confinement potential. The results show that the optical absorptions are strongly affected by the repulsive core. Moreover, the repulsive core can influence the oscillation in the resonant peak of the absorption coefficients.

Absorption Spectra and Refractive Index Changes of an Exciton in a Core/Shell Quantum Dot

Xie Wen

The absorption spectra and the refractive index changes are calculated theoretically for an exciton in a core/shell quantum dot. The advantage of our methodology is that one can investigate the influence of the repulsive core by varying two parameters in the confinement potential. The dimensionality effect of exciton quantum dots on the optical absorptions has been studied. It has been found that in the same regime, the optical absorption intensities of excitons are much smaller for the core/shell quantum dots than for the two-dimensional quantum rings. The linear and the nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes have been examined with the change of the confinement potential. The results show that the optical absorptions and the refractive index changes are strongly affected by the repulsive core of core/shell quantum dots. Moreover, the calculated results also reveal that as the inner radius increases, the peak values of the absorption coefficients and the refractive index changes of an exciton will show the optical Aharonov–Bohm oscillation in core/shell quantum dots.

Linear and nonlinear optical absorptions in one-dimensional quantum dot with semi-parabolic confining potential

Youbin Yu

Linear and nonlinear optical absorptions in one-dimensional semi-parabolic quantum dot is investigated. The analytical expression of linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients are obtained by using compact density-matrix approach and iterative method. Numerical results are presented for an GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dot and the dependence on the quantum confinement of the semi-parabolic quantum dot, the incident optical intensity, and on the relaxation rate are also investigated. The results indicate that the optical absorption coefficients are strongly influenced by the confining frequency, relaxation time, and the incident optical intensity, respectively. However, their influences for the linear optical absorption, third-order nonlinear optical absorption, and the total optical absorption are different. We think our theoretical study may make a great contribution to experimental studies and may open up new opportunities for practical exploitation of the quantum-size effect in optical devices.

Absorption spectra of a donor impurity in a quantum ring

Wenfang Xie

Abstract The linear and the third‐order nonlinear optical absorption spectra of a donor impurity confined by a quantum ring are studied using the matrix diagonalization method within the effective‐mass approximation. The linear and the third‐order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients between the ground (L = 0) and the first excited state (L = 1) have been examined based on the computed energies and wavefunctions. The results are presented as a function of the incident photon energy for the different values of the confinement strength, the incident optical density and the ring radius. We found the confinement strength, the incident optical density and the ring radius have a great effect on the linear, the third‐order nonlinear and total absorption spectra. Dependence of nonlinear optical properties on electrostatic interaction in an excitonic parabolic quantum dot in a static magnetic field

Monica Gambhir, Vinod Prasad

The linear and the third-order nonlinear optical properties of an exciton confined in a three-dimensional quantum dot with a parabolic potential are studied in a static magnetic field. Eigenvalues, wave functions, dipole matrix elements and selection rules are calculated analytically. Based on the calculated energies and wave functions, within the effective mass approximation, a compact-density matrix approach is employed to analyse the absorption coefficients and refractive index changes. The study is first of its kind since the excitonic effects are studied in a static magnetic field considering both the confinement potential and the electrostatic interaction between the electron-hole pair. An important finding of our research is the dependence of the magnitude of absorption coefficients on the radius of the quantum dot, the result that may have broad implications in future device designing.

Optical properties of an exciton trapped by an ionized donor in ellipsoidal quantum dots under electric field and hydrostatic pressure

Lei Shi, Yan Zu-wei

The optical properties of an exciton trapped by an ionized donor in an ellipsoidal quantum dot (QD) with both oblate and prolate shapes under applied electric field and hydrostatic pressure have been studied. We have calculated the linear and third-order nonlinear absorption coefficients (ACs) and refractive index changes (RICs) by using a variational method within the perturbation theory. The results show that the QD shape and size have a significant influence on the positions and magnitudes of the peaks of the (ACs) and RICs, moreover, the influence of hydrostatic pressure and electric field under different QD shape is also different.
