Dependence of nonlinear optical properties on electrostatic interaction in an excitonic parabolic quantum dot in a static magnetic field

Abstract

The linear and the third-order nonlinear optical properties of an exciton confined in a three-dimensional quantum dot with a parabolic potential are studied in a static magnetic field. Eigenvalues, wave functions, dipole matrix elements and selection rules are calculated analytically. Based on the calculated energies and wave functions, within the effective mass approximation, a compact-density matrix approach is employed to analyse the absorption coefficients and refractive index changes. The study is first of its kind since the excitonic effects are studied in a static magnetic field considering both the confinement potential and the electrostatic interaction between the electron-hole pair. An important finding of our research is the dependence of the magnitude of absorption coefficients on the radius of the quantum dot, the result that may have broad implications in future device designing.

Linear and Nonlinear Optical Absorptions of a Hydrogenic Donor in a Quantum Dot Under a Magnetic Field

Xie Wen-Fang

The linear and nonlinear optical properties of a hydrogenic donor in a disc-like parabolic quantum dot in the presence of an external magnetic field are studied. The calculations were performed within the effective mass approximation, using the matrix diagonalization method and the compact density-matrix approach. The linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients between the ground (L = 0) and the first excited state (L = 1) have been examined based on the computed energies and wave functions. We find that the linear, nonlinear third-order, and total optical absorption coefficients are strongly affected by the confinement strength of QDs, the external magnetic field, and the incident optical intensity.

Electron-related nonlinear optical properties of cylindrical quantum dot with the Rosen–Morse axial potential

Fatih Ungan, Mustafa Kemal Bahar, Suvajit Pal +1 more

Abstract We present a theoretical study on the effects of intense laser field (ILF) and static electric field on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of a cylindrical quantum dot with Rosen–Morse axial potential under the framework of effective mass and parabolic band approximations. This study also takes into account the effects of the structure parameters ( η , V 1 , and R ). The analytical expressions of the linear, third-order nonlinear and total optical absorption coefficients (TOACs) and the relative refractive index changes (RRICs) are obtained by using the compact-density-matrix approach. The results of numerical calculations show that the resonant peak position of the TOACs and RRICs shifts towards lower energies and the magnitude of the peak increases with the effect of the static electric field and ILF. In addition, it is observed that while the resonant energies of the TOACs and RRICs of system shift towards the higher (lower) energies with the enhancement of η , V 1 , they decrease with the augmentation of R . Thus, the findings of this study show that the optical properties of the structure can be adjusted by changing the magnitude of structure parameters and applied external fields.

Effects of the Magnetic Field on the Linear and Nonlinear Optical Absorption Coefficients and the Refractive Index Changes in a Spherical Quantum Dot

Muharrem Kırak, Sait Yılmaz, Mustafa Gençaslan

The linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients (ACs) and the refractive index change (RIC) for a spherical quantum dot, having a hydrogenic impurity under an applied magnetic field have been theoretically studied. In numerical calculations, a variational scheme is adopted within effective mass approximation to determine the energy eigenvalues for the impurtiy. The variations of impurity binding energy with the dot radius, the linear and nonlinear ACs and RIC with the photon energy are investigated and effect of homogeneous magnetic field strength is discussed on these optical properties. It has been found that the binding energy, ACs and RIC are sensitively dependent on the magnetic field strength. Moreover, the calculated results also indicate that the absorption peak energies move to higher energies with increasing magnetic field.

The effect of temperature, hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field on the nonlinear optical properties of AlGaAs/GaAs semi-parabolic quantum well

Jin-Feng You, Qiang Zhao, Zhihai Zhang +3 more

In this paper, we explore the optical properties of AlGaAs/GaAs semi-parabolic quantum well (QW) under different temperature, hydrostatic pressure and applied magnetic field. We calculate the nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and the refractive index changes (RICs) with the compact density-matrix approach and iterative method. Then, within the framework of the effective mass and parabolic-band approximations, the energy eigenvalues and the corresponding wave functions for semi-parabolic QW have been obtained by the finite difference method. The theoretical findings show that (1) the energy spectrum depends strongly on temperature, hydrostatic pressure and applied magnetic field; (2) the linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients and the RICs are quite sensitive to temperature, hydrostatic pressure and applied magnetic field. Our study provides a theoretical basis for the fabrication of QW structure.

Hydrogenic impurity effect on optical properties of Wannier-Mott exciton confined in a spherical quantum dot with Kratzer potential under magnetic field

Varsha, Rajesh Giri, Monika Arora +1 more

Confinement effects of Kratzer potential on a Wannier-Mott Exciton(W-M) are studied in a spherical quantum dot(QD) in the presence of a static magnetic field. Time independent Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation is solved numerically to obtain the energy states. The excitonic transitions so realized have been used to explore the non-linear optical properties that are important for optical characterization of materials such as the optical absorption coefficients (ACs) and refractive index changes (RICs). Impact of magnetic field, strength of the laser field and transition parameters using familiar compact density matrix approach are also analyzed. It has been observed that optical properties get radically modified under confinement effects. Also, the shift of degeneracy of different excitonic energy levels with the magnetic field in confinement potential has been reported for the first time for W-M exciton in the spherical quantum dot, the study that may have crucial input to the literature and myriad of practical implications.

Linear and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Spherical Quantum Dots: Effects of Hydrogenic Impurity and Conduction Band Non-Parabolicity

G. Rezaei, Behrooz Vaseghi, N.A. Doostimotlagh

Simultaneous effects of an on-center hydrogenic impurity and band edge non-parabolicity on intersubband optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes of a typical GaAs/Al x Ga 1−x As spherical quantum dot are theoretically investigated, using the Luttinger—Kohn effective mass equation. So, electronic structure and optical properties of the system are studied by means of the matrix diagonalization technique and compact density matrix approach, respectively. Finally, effects of an impurity, band edge non-parabolicity, incident light intensity and the dot size on the linear, the third-order nonlinear and the total optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes are investigated. Our results indicate that, the magnitudes of these optical quantities increase and their peaks shift to higher energies as the influences of the impurity and the band edge non-parabolicity are considered. Moreover, incident light intensity and the dot size have considerable effects on the optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes.
