Abstract

Abstract The linear and the third‐order nonlinear optical absorption spectra of a donor impurity confined by a quantum ring are studied using the matrix diagonalization method within the effective‐mass approximation. The linear and the third‐order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients between the ground (L = 0) and the first excited state (L = 1) have been examined based on the computed energies and wavefunctions. The results are presented as a function of the incident photon energy for the different values of the confinement strength, the incident optical density and the ring radius. We found the confinement strength, the incident optical density and the ring radius have a great effect on the linear, the third‐order nonlinear and total absorption spectra. Calculation of the changes in the absorption and refractive index for intersubband optical transitions in a quantum box

İbrahim Karabulut, S. Ünlü, Haluk Şafak

Abstract Analytic forms of the changes of the absorption and refractive index associated with intersubband optical transitions in a quantum box are obtained by using the compact density matrix approach. Numerical results are presented for a typical AlGaAs/GaAs quantum box system. The linear, third‐order nonlinear, and total refractive‐index and absorption changes are examined as a function of the incident optical intensity. The results obtained show that the incident optical intensity has a great effect on the total absorption and refractive‐index changes. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Third-order nonlinear absorption spectra of an impurity in a spherical quantum dot with different confining potential

S. Yılmaz, Mehmet Şahin

In this study, the linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients of intersublevel transitions have been calculated for a spherical CdS/SiO2 quantum dot (QD) with infinite and different finite confining potential by using the density matrix formalism. The electron eigenenergies and the corresponding wavefunctions have been determined by the variational method under the effective mass approximation. We have investigated the effects of the incident optical intensity, QD radius, and confinement potential on the intersublevel optical absorption coefficients. It is found that the size of the dot and depth of the confinement have a great effect on the linear, the nonlinear, and the total absorption coefficients. Also, the total optical absorption saturation intensity is controlled by the strength of the confinement or the incident optical intensity.

Linear and Nonlinear Optical Absorptions of a Hydrogenic Donor in a Quantum Dot Under a Magnetic Field

Xie Wen-Fang

The linear and nonlinear optical properties of a hydrogenic donor in a disc-like parabolic quantum dot in the presence of an external magnetic field are studied. The calculations were performed within the effective mass approximation, using the matrix diagonalization method and the compact density-matrix approach. The linear and nonlinear optical absorption coefficients between the ground (L = 0) and the first excited state (L = 1) have been examined based on the computed energies and wave functions. We find that the linear, nonlinear third-order, and total optical absorption coefficients are strongly affected by the confinement strength of QDs, the external magnetic field, and the incident optical intensity.

Effect of magnetic field, size and donor position on the absorption coefficients related a donor within the core/shell/shell quantum dot

E. B. Al

Abstract In this study, linear, nonlinear and total optical absorption coefficients related a single shallow donor atom confined in semiconductor core/shell/shell quantum dot heterostructure are researched in detail within the compact density matrix formalism approximation. For this purpose, firstly, the energies and the wavefunctions are computed by the diagonalization method in the effective mass approach. Moreover, the effects of size modulation, donor position and magnetic field are analyzed. The numerical results indicate that the linear and nonlinear parts of the absorption coefficients related with intersubband 1s-1p and 1p-1d donor transitions undergo significant changes.

Nonlinear Optical Properties of a Quantum Well With Short-Range Bottomless Exponential Potential

Fatih Ungan

In the present study, the effect of the depth of the confinement potential on the nonlinear optical of a GaAs quantum well with short-range bottomless exponential potential is studied in detail. The energy eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of this structure are calculated within the framework of effective mass and envelope function approximations. Analytic formulas for the linear, third-order nonlinear and total absorption coefficients and relative refractive index changes are obtained using the compact-density matrix approach (CDMA) and iterative method. Based on this model, our obtained numerical results are reported as a function of incident photon energy for several values of the depth of the confinement potential. The results show that the linear, third order nonlinear, and total absorption coefficients and relative refractive index changes are strongly affected by the depth of the confinement potential.

Linear and nonlinear optical absorptions in one-dimensional quantum dot with semi-parabolic confining potential

Youbin Yu

Linear and nonlinear optical absorptions in one-dimensional semi-parabolic quantum dot is investigated. The analytical expression of linear and third-order nonlinear optical absorption coefficients are obtained by using compact density-matrix approach and iterative method. Numerical results are presented for an GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dot and the dependence on the quantum confinement of the semi-parabolic quantum dot, the incident optical intensity, and on the relaxation rate are also investigated. The results indicate that the optical absorption coefficients are strongly influenced by the confining frequency, relaxation time, and the incident optical intensity, respectively. However, their influences for the linear optical absorption, third-order nonlinear optical absorption, and the total optical absorption are different. We think our theoretical study may make a great contribution to experimental studies and may open up new opportunities for practical exploitation of the quantum-size effect in optical devices.
