Abstract

Abstract Analytic forms of the changes of the absorption and refractive index associated with intersubband optical transitions in a quantum box are obtained by using the compact density matrix approach. Numerical results are presented for a typical AlGaAs/GaAs quantum box system. The linear, third‐order nonlinear, and total refractive‐index and absorption changes are examined as a function of the incident optical intensity. The results obtained show that the incident optical intensity has a great effect on the total absorption and refractive‐index changes. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Refractive Index Changes Induced by the Incident Optical Intensity in Semiparabolic Quantum Wells

Guanghui Wang, Qi Guo, Kangxian Guo

The refractive index changes near the absorption edge in semiparabolic quantum wells are examined as a function of the incident optical intensity, and an analytic formula for the changes in the refractive index is obtained by using the compact-density matrix approach and an iterative method. Numerical results are presented for some typical AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells. The calculated results show that the incident optical intensity and the semiparabolic confinement frequency have a great influence on the total refractive index changes.

Linear and Nonlinear Intersubband Refractive Index Changes in Asymmetric Coupled Quantum Wells

Bin Chen, Kangxian Guo, Ruizhen Wang +2 more

Linear, nonlinear, and total refractive index changes are investigated theoretically in asymmetric coupled quantum wells. The analytical expressions for the linear and third-order nonlinear refractive index changes are obtained based on the density matrix method and the iterative approach. Numerical calculations are performed for typical GaAs/Al(subscript x)Ga(subscript 1-x)As asymmetric coupled quantum wells. The calculated results reveal that a large variation of the refractive index near the transition energy can be obtained in asymmetric coupled quantum wells, and that the incident optical intensity and the structure parameters, such as the barrier width and the right-well width, have great effects on the total refractive index changes.

Intersubband optical absorption coefficients and refractive index changes in a V‐groove quantum wire

Reza Khordad, S. Kheiryzadeh Khaneghah

Abstract In this paper, the intersubband optical absorption coefficients and the refractive index changes are studied in a V‐groove quantum wire. We use analytical expressions for these properties obtained by the compact‐density matrix formalism. In this regard, the linear, nonlinear and total intersubband absorption coefficients and refractive index changes are investigated as a function of the bend width wire (b), the incident optical intensity (I), and the angle θ. According to the results obtained from the present work, it is deduced that: (i) The linear terms in the refractive index changes and absorption coefficients dose not change with incident optical intensity whereas nonlinear terms depend on incident optical intensity; (ii) The total refractive index changes and the absorption coefficients reduce as the incident optical intensity increases; (iii) The total absorption coefficient and refractive index changes increase and also shift toward higher energies as the bend width wire increases; and (iv) The total refractive index changes and absorption coefficients shift toward higher energies as the angle θ increases.

Calculation of linear and nonlinear intersubband refractive‐index changes in an asymmetrical semiparabolic quantum well with applied electric field

Li Zhang, Junjie Shi

Abstract By using the displacement harmonic variant method and the compact density matrix approach, the linear and nonlinear intersubband refractive‐index changes (RICs) in a semiparabolic quantum well (QW) with an applied electric field have been investigated in detail. Simple analytical formulae for the linear and nonlinear RICs in the system were also deduced. The effect of the band nonparabolicity has been taken into account. Numerical calculations of typical GaAs semiparabolic QWs were performed. The dependence of the linear and nonlinear RICs on the incident optical intensity, the frequency of the confined potential of the semiparabolic quantum well, and the strength of the applied electric field were discussed under both conditions of considering and ignoring the band nonparabolicity. Results reveal that the RICs in the semiparabolic quantum‐well system sensitively depend on these factors. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

INTERSUBBAND OPTICAL ABSORPTION COEFFICIENTS AND REFRACTIVE INDEX CHANGES OF AN ELLIPSOIDAL FINITE POTENTIAL QUANTUM DOT

G. Rezaei, M.R.K. Vahdani, M. Barati

Intersubband optical absorption coefficient and refractive index changes of a weakly prolate ellipsoidal quantum dot, using the compact-density matrix formalism and iterative method, are investigated. In this regard, the linear and nonlinear intersubband optical absorption coefficient and refractive index changes of a GaAs / Al x Ga 1-x As ellipsoidal quantum dot, as functions of the dot radius, ellipticity constant, stoichiometric ratio and incident light intensity are calculated. The results indicate that absorption coefficient and refractive index changes strongly depend on the light intensity, size and geometry of the dot and structure parameters such as aluminium concentration in GaAs / Al x Ga 1-x As structures.
