Abstract

The sub-Doppler transmission spectrum in a thin vapour layer (about 150 μm) was observed at room temperature using the wavelength modulation technology. The absorption signal and its second-order harmonic were detected with an external-cavity diode laser. A sub-Doppler spectrum corresponding to resonant transitions of the caesium D 2 line (6S 1/2 →6P 3/2 ) was demonstrated. The dependence of the transmission signal on the intensity of the laser was also investigated.

The Transmission Spectrum in a Thin Cs Vapor Cell

Jia Suo-Tang

The single light beam transmission spectrum of the 6S 1/2 →6P 3/2  in a thin (about 150 μm) vapor cell of the cesium atom is measured with freque n cy modulation technology. The high harmonics of the signal are measured correspo ndingly. The spectrum reveals sub-Doppler features. And the effect of the laser power on the signal is investigated.

Sub-Doppler spectroscopy and coherence resonances in submicron Cs vapour layer

T. Varzhapetyan, David G. Sarkisyan, Lyubomir P. Petrov +6 more

The absorption and fluorescence spectra of a submicron Cs vapour layer under resonant excitation on the D2 line are measured. Sub-Doppler features centered at the resonance frequency of the hyperfine (hf) transitions have been observed. Substantial changes in the amplitude and width of the sub-Doppler resonances for individual hf transitions were recorded in dependence on the intensity of the incident laser radiation. In the fluorescence spectra narrow dips due to the effects of saturation have been observed. We also report about the observation of coherence resonances in Hanle configuration obtained at cell thickness of the order of the wavelength of the laser light.

Autler–Townes doublet in novel sub-Doppler spectra with caesium vapour cell

Yanhua Wang, Yang Hai-Jing, Du Zhi-Jing +2 more

With a coupling laser locked to caesium 6S 1/2 F g =4–6P 3/2 F e =5 cycling transition and a co-propagating probe laser scanned across 6S 1/2 F g =4–6P 3/2 F e =3, 4 and 5 transitions, a novel scheme for sub-Doppler spectra in Doppler-broadened V-type three-level system is demonstrated by detecting the transmission of the coupling laser through a caesium vapour cell. The Autler–Townes doublet in the sub-Doppler spectra of the coupling laser is clearly observed. The effects of coupling laser intensity on the splitting and linewidth of the Autler–Townes doublet are experimentally investigated and the results agree well with theoretical predictions. Taking the multiple hyperfine levels of caesium atom into account, a brief analysis is presented.

Two-frequency sub-Doppler spectroscopy of the caesium D1 line in various configurations of counterpropagating laser beams

Denis V. Brazhnikov, S M Ignatovich, I. S. Mesenzova +3 more

Sub-Doppler resonances in caesium vapours are studied in a laser field produced by counterpropagating two-frequency light beams with mutually orthogonal linear polarisations. The beams are in resonance with optical transitions in the D1 line, the frequency difference of the field spectral components being equal to the hyperfine ground-state splitting in the Cs atom (≈9.2 GHz). It has already been shown that in this configuration, the hypercontrast effect can be observed for sub-Doppler resonances, which makes this configuration promising for the employment in newgeneration miniature optical frequency standards. In the present work, two different two-frequency configurations are compared with each other and with the single-frequency configuration widely used in practice for observing saturated absorption resonances. The parameters of nonlinear resonances are measured at various temperatures of caesium vapours and at different optical field intensities. The results of the investigations performed make it possible to find an optimal two-frequency scheme for exciting nonlinear resonances and to estimate a potential of the scheme for its applications in quantum metrology.

Transmission spectroscopy in a thin vapour layer and its derivative properties

Yanting Zhao, Jianming Zhao, Liantuan Xiao +1 more

A novel method of high-resolution spectroscopy of gases is proposed. The method is based on observing the optical behaviour of thin vapour layer when the particles cross the light beam or collide with the cell walls. The atomic motion and electronic quenching on gas-solid interfaces are explored by numerical analysis. The periodicity of peak values of transmission spectra and its derivative spectra demonstrates a sub-Doppler structure corresponding to the resonant transitions.
