Schrodinger cat states of two bosonic modes

Abstract

The possibility of generating bosonic bimodal Schrödinger cat states is briefly demonstrated. The experimental scheme here presented relies on the existence of an intrinsically nonclassical effect stemming from the granularity of the quantized electromagnetic field.

“Parity effect” based generation of Schrodinger cat like states in high-

Anna Napoli, ANTONINO MESSINA

It has been very recently shown that the dynamics of a two-level atom coupled to a bimodal degenerate cavity field by two-photon processes, is characterized by an interesting nonclassical dynamical behavior christened “parity effect”. This effect consists in the fact that if the cavity field is prepared leaving one mode in its vacuum state and exciting the other one in a generic linear combination of even number states only, or odd number states only, then there exists an appropriate intensity-dependent interval of time after which the bimodal cavity exhibits macroscopically different parity-dependent quantum features. We show that this nonclassical effect is at the origin of the possibility of generating Schrodinger cat like states of the bimodal field appropriately selecting its initial conditions.

Nonclassical properties and generation of quantum superpositions of two coherent states

Anna Napoli, ANTONINO MESSINA

Nonclassical properties of a particular class of quantum superpositions of two coherent states of a single-mode quantized electromagnetic field are brought to light and discussed. A new and simple way of engineering such states is presented. Our proposal, developed in the context of micromaser theory, exploits the passage of one atom only through a high- Q bimodal cavity supporting two electromagnetic modes of different frequencies.

Nonclassical properties of correlated two-mode Schrödinger cat states

Christopher C. Gerry, R. Grobe

We generalize the concept of Schr\"odinger cat states to macroscopic superpositions of two pairs coherent states. We show that these states can have various nonclassical features such as the violation of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, sub-Poissonian photon-number statistics, and squeezing. We propose schemes to generate these states.

Generation of Glauber Coherent State Superpositions via Unitary Transformations

ANTONINO MESSINA, Benedetto Militello, Anna Napoli

Since their introduction by Glauber in 1963 [1], coherent states have been deeply studied [2] due to the fact that, in some sense, the statistical properties related to the first momenta of their Fock distribution exhibit features interpretable in the realm of classical probability theory. Of course the quantum nature of a coherent state, and ultimately the granularity of the energy of a quantum harmonic oscillator, becomes more and more evident when higher momenta of the Fock distribution are considered. It is of relevance that coherent states of both a mechanical quantum oscillator or a quantized mode of an electromagnetic resonator may be currently proposed in accordance with well-defined protocols. Even more interesting is the fact that they provide the effective possibility of realizing interesting experiments able to bring to the light peculiarities of quantum mechanics. In particular, the very famous gedanken Schrodinger Cat State (SCS) experiment [3] consisting in entangling a microscopic quantum object (an atom) with a macroscopic one (a cat) has been realized. No unfortunate feline has been tortured! Trapped ions have been indeed exploited. In fact, such systems provide the possibility of testing fundamental quantum physics aspects giving at experimentalist’s disposal compound quantum systems consisting of a few-level atomic part and a tri-dimensional harmonic oscillator describing the center of mass motion of an ion confined into a Paul trap. Suitably acting upon the system with Raman lasers it is possible to engineer the Schrodinger Cat-like state [4, 5]
