Abstract

Nonclassical properties of a particular class of quantum superpositions of two coherent states of a single-mode quantized electromagnetic field are brought to light and discussed. A new and simple way of engineering such states is presented. Our proposal, developed in the context of micromaser theory, exploits the passage of one atom only through a high- Q bimodal cavity supporting two electromagnetic modes of different frequencies.

Superposition of single-mode para-Bose coherent states: Generation and nonclassical properties

B. Mojaveri, Alireza Dehghani, R. Jafarzadeh Bahrbeig

In this paper, we introduce two classes of superposed states generated by a superposition of two single-mode para-Bose coherent states (CS) with arbitrary relative phase factors. The first class is superposition of two opposite para-Bose CS and second class consists of two para-Bose CS, [Formula: see text] out of phase with each other. These states are reduced to the well-known superposed single-mode CS of the simple harmonic oscillator when the deformation parameter tends to one. We study the nonclassical properties of the introduced states by evaluating their para-Bose Fock state distribution, second-order squeezing, Klyshko’s and Mandel’s parameters. We investigate the essential role of coherent and deformation parameters on their nonclassicality. We show that some nonclassical properties of these states are different from those of the even and odd coherent states. Finally, we present a simple scheme for the physical generation of the introduced states.

Nonclassical properties and quantum resources of hierarchical photonic superposition states

Tyler J. Volkoff

We motivate and introduce a class of “hierarchical” quantum superposition states of N coupled quantum oscillators. Unlike other well-known multimode photonic Schrödinger-cat states such as entangled coherent states, the hierarchical superposition states are characterized as two-branch superpositions of tensor products of single-mode Schrödinger-cat states. In addition to analyzing the photon statistics and quasiprobability distributions of prominent examples of these nonclassical states, we consider their usefulness for highprecision quantum metrology of nonlinear optical Hamiltonians and quantify their mode entanglement. We propose two methods for generating hierarchical superpositions in N = 2 coupled microwave cavities, exploiting currently existing quantum optical technology for generating entanglement between spatially separated electromagnetic field modes.

Local entanglement in a bimodal high- Q cavity: Production and utilization

Anna Napoli, Antonio Messina

A new conditional scheme for entangling the two quantized modes of a bimodal high-Q cavity field is presented. We show that, injecting one at time k atoms inside the cavity, it is possible to guide the field toward k-dependent linear combinations of k + 1 bimodal Fock states, each one possessing the same total number of photons. The two simple cases corresponding to the passage of one or two atoms only through the resonator are considered. Their practical feasibility against cavity losses, spontaneous emission and other sources of imprecision of the experimental set-up is discussed. Two examples illustrating the usefulness of and the interest toward the creation of such a local entanglement, are reported. The first one relates the specific features of these bimodal entangled states to the occurrence of a non-classical correlation effect in the dynamics of a two-level atom interacting with the entangled cavity. The second one demonstrates that the peculiar entanglement initially stored in the cavity in accordance with our method, provides an effectively exploitable resource to entangle two spatially separated cavities.

Photon-number-state generation with a single two-level atom in a cavity: a proposal

P. Domokos, M. Brune, J. M. Raimond +2 more

A single two-level atom can be used to prepare an arbitrary photon number state (Fock state) in a high Q cavity . The atom undergoes a controlled succession of interactions with two cavity modes. One of them contains a coherent field. The atom transfers photons one by one from this field to the initially empty second mode. The scheme can be extended to prepare a quantum superposition of the vacuum with a Fock state, a highly non-classical situation. We discuss the feasibility of the experiment with our present Rydberg-atom cavity QED set-up.

Maximally entangled states of a bimodal cavity field

Anna Napoli, Antonio Messina

A simple scheme for the generation of a class of maximally entangled two-mode field states is presented. Our proposal provides the possibility of manipulating the quantum coherence between the superposed states, simply varying an experimentally easily controllable parameter. The practical feasibility of the method here reported is carefully discussed.

Scheme for efficient generation of mesoscopic field-state superposition in cavity QED

Carla Hermann-Avigliano, Nataly Cisternas, M. Brune +2 more

We present a simple scheme for the fast and efficient generation of quantum superpositions of two coherent fields with different classical amplitudes in a cavity. It relies on the simultaneous interaction of two two-level systems with the field. Their final detection with a high probability in the proper state projects the field onto the desired mesoscopic field state superposition. We show that the scheme is notably more efficient than those using a single atom. We discuss the method in the context of microwave cavity quantum electrodynamics, but it is also highly relevant for the thriving field of circuit QED. It may lead to interesting experimental studies of decoherence at the quantum-classical boundary.
