Abstract

Zero-field level-crossing signals were registered in two excited levels pertaining to the 5 p 2 6 s configuration of Sb I, using natural antimony. Lifetimes for these levels were extracted by a theoretical fit to the experimental data with the results τ(5 p 2 6 s 4 P 3/2 ) = 5.1(6)ns τ(5 p 2 6 s 4 P 5/2 ) = 4.8(6)ns

Measurements of Lowest-S-State Lifetimes of Gallium, Indium, and Thalium

Michael Norton, Alan C. Gallagher

The lifetimes of the gallium $5^{2}S_{\frac{1}{2}}$ state, the indium $6^{2}S_{\frac{1}{2}}$ state, and the thallium $7^{2}S_{\frac{1}{2}}$ state were measured using the zero-field level-crossing (Hanle-effect) technique. The life-times obtained were (6.8\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}9}$, (7.0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}9}$, and (7.45\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2) \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}9}$ sec, respectively. Anomalous contributions to the level-crossing signals, from the wavelength dependence of the exciting light intensity and self-absorption by the fluorescing atomic beam, were investigated in detail.

LEVEL CROSSING EXPERIMENTS IN THE Tm I AND Sm I SPECTRA

E. Handrich, A. Steudel, Richard E. Wallenstein +1 more

The lifetimes of 12 levels of the Tm I and of 4 levels of the Sm I spectrum have been measured using the technique of zero field level crossing (Hanle effect). For two Tm I levels the hyperfine splitting of 169Tm was also measured by investigating the level crossings at finite magnetic fields. The lifetimes of the Tm I levels are discussed using the eigenvectors recently derived by Camus.

Lifetime of the 6s6p1P1 level of barium

L. O. Dickie, F. M. Kelly

The lifetime of the first excited singlet P level of barium, 6s6p1P1, has been determined from the width of the zero field level crossing, i.e. the Hanle effect, of the 6s6p1P1 –6s21S0, 5535 Å resonance line. The resonance radiation was produced in a hollow cathode lamp and the scattering atoms by an atomic beam. After taking account of coherence narrowing, the lifetime is determined to be 8.37 ± 0.14 × 10−9 s, in good agreement with other recent work.

Level-Crossing-Experimente an einigen Heliumzuständen bei Ionenstoßanregung / Level-Crossing-Experiments on some He States excited by Ion Impact

K. Buchhaupt

Lifetime of the 1s2(P11) and 1s4(P13) levels of neon by the cascade Hanle effect

Natarajan D. Bhaskar, Allen Lurio

The theory of the cascade level-crossing effect as formulated by Happer is evaluated for zero-nuclear-spin atomic systems and extended to include the case of a polarized initial state. We have used this theory to interpret our cascade-Hanle-effect results (zero-field level crossings) to obtain the lifetime of the two resonance levels, $1{s}_{2}(^{1}P_{1})$ and $1{s}_{4}(^{3}P_{1})$, of the $2{p}^{5}3s$ configuration of neon. The resonance lines 744 \AA{} ($1{s}_{4}\ensuremath{-}^{1}S_{0}$) and 736 \AA{} ($1{s}_{2}\ensuremath{-}^{1}S_{0}$) are produced in the cascade to the ground $^{1}S_{0}$ state when a beam of metastable $1{s}_{3}(^{3}P_{0})$ and $1{s}_{5}(^{3}P_{2})$ neon atoms is excited by selected lines of the $2{p}^{5}3s\ensuremath{-}2{p}^{5}3p$ transition array. Our results are $\ensuremath{\tau}(1{s}_{2})=1.65\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.16$ nsec and $\ensuremath{\tau}(1{s}_{4})=20.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5$ nsec.
