Role of pumping statistics in micromasers

We show that regularization of pumping leads to large photon-number noise reduction in one- and two-photon micromasers, and is much more important than in macroscopic lasers and masers. Our calculations are based on a step-by-step microscopic approach and are compared to results obtained from a pumping-statistics-dependent master equation, which is shown not to be entirely reliable in the micromaser case. Although noise reduction and the discrepancies betwen the two approaches are more important for monokinetic beams, they are still relevant when a 10% velocity dispersion is allowed.

Quantum theory of light generation by two-level atoms without inversion

В. Н. Горбачев, Andrew I. Trubilko

When pumping produces atomic coherence on working levels or atomic polarization two-level atom can generate the light without inversion. In such systems one- and two-photon generation of the light is considered for the laser and micromaser operation. Using Lamb-Scully model generalized for coherent pumping statistics of the light is considered. Two-photon laser operation is found to be phase squeezed and perfect noise reduction can be achieved. In maser a set of steady state of subpoissian photon statistics is found. For these states the noise reduction up to 60 percent can be obtained if inversion is zero. Phase squeezing in micromaser is found.

Quantum noise reduction in the non-degenerate three-level micromaser

Carlos R. de Carvalho, Paulo A. Maia Neto

We present the theory of a micromaser operating on a cascade three-level atomic transition, which is coupled to two cavity modes satisfying the resonance condition. A numerical approach is employed to integrate the master equation describing the microwave field, allowing us to obtain the semiclassical regime in the limit of large mean photon numbers. We show that the transfer rate from the excited atomic state is very close to 100% over a large interval of variation of the interaction time. The atom - field interaction time may be chosen so as to avoid transitions to the intermediate atomic state when in steady-state operation. In this case, the two cavity modes have nearly the same photon statistics, and the fluctuations in the difference of intensities may be reduced by up to 50% below the classical limit. The intensity correlation between the two cavity modes originates from the possibility of controlling the interaction time, rather than from the simultaneous generation of `twin' photons in a two-photon transition.
