Localization of a small collection of fluorescing atoms

Abstract

We describe a scheme capable of localizing an ensemble of interacting two-level atoms. The atoms are assumed to be bunched together in a volume much smaller than an emission wavelength, and they interact with a standing wave laser field. Due to the laser-pumping of the atomic sample, it collectively emits fluorescence light with properties depending on the ensemble position in the standing wave. This relation can be described by a fluorescence intensity profile, which depends on the standing wave field parameters, the ensemble properties, and which is modified due to collective effects in the ensemble of nearby particles. We demonstrate that the intensity profile can be tailored to suit different localization setups.

Localization of atomic ensembles via superfluorescence

The subwavelength localization of an ensemble of atoms concentrated to a small volume in space is investigated. The localization relies on the interaction of the ensemble with a standing wave laser field. The light scattered in the interaction of the standing wave field and the atom ensemble depends on the position of the ensemble relative to the standing wave nodes. This relation can be described by a fluorescence intensity profile, which depends on the standing wave field parameters and the ensemble properties and which is modified due to collective effects in the ensemble of nearby particles. We demonstrate that the intensity profile can be tailored to suit different localization setups. Finally, we apply these results to two localization schemes. First, we show how to localize an ensemble fixed at a certain position in the standing wave field. Second, we discuss localization of an ensemble passing through the standing wave field.

Sub-half-wavelength atom localization via coherence-controlled resonance fluorescence

Wen-bing Shen, Xiangming Hu, Jun Xu

We present a scheme for sub-half-wavelength localization based on phase-dependent coherent effects on resonance fluorescence. A three-level atom in the Λ configuration is considered. Two metastable states are so separated from each other that the fluorescence spectra from the different transitions do not overlap. Two dipole-allowed transitions and one dipole-forbidden transition are driven by a standing-wave laser field, a travelling-wave laser field and a microwave field, respectively. The spectrum of fluorescence from the standing-wave coupled transition is dependent not only on the position but also on the collective phase of all applied fields. When the phase is varied and fluorescence photons are detected, 50% probability is achieved in a half-wavelength region. This scheme is as efficient as previous ones based on coherence-controlled Autler–Townes spectra.

Quantum interference induced sub-wavelength atomic localization

Emmanuel Paspalakis, A. F. Terzis, P. L. Knight

We investigate how observation of upper state atomic populations localize atomic position distributions for three-level atoms within a classical standing wave light field. We consider a three-level atom, with the standing wave near-resonantly coupling one transition and a probe laser field near-resonantly coupling the second transition. Two different cases of localization are identified and we explore the dependence of localization on the parameters of the field–atom interaction.

Cooperative emission from two atoms localized in a standing wave field

Nelly Ciobanu, N. A. Enaki, Miguel Orszag

The effect of standing wave amplitude on the resonance fluorescence of a three-level system of radiators is discussed. The cooperative emission and the fluorescence spectrum of emitted photons from two atoms situated in the nodes and anti-nodes of the laser field are investigated. A realizable model for producing an entangled state, that can be controlled via the distance of localization between two atoms in the anti-nodes, is discussed.

Three-dimensional atom localization by laser fields in a four-level tripod system

Vladimir S. Ivanov, Yu. Rozhdestvensky, Kalle‐Antti Suominen

We present a scheme for high-precision three-dimensional (3D) localization by the measurement of the atomic-level population. The scheme is applied to a four-level tripod-type atom coupled by three strong standing waves and a probe running wave. As a result, the atom can be localized in volumes that are substantially smaller than a cubic optical wavelength, which is achieved by the increase of standing-wave intensities. The upper-level distribution depends crucially on the atom-field coupling and it forms 3D periodic structures composed of spheres, hourglasses, bowls, donuts, or deformed barrels.

Atom localization via resonance fluorescence

Sajid Qamar, Shi-Yao Zhu, Muhammad Suhail Zubairy

We propose a simple scheme of atom localization based on resonance fluorescence from a standing-wave field. The Rabi frequency is position dependent and therefore the spontaneously emitted photon carries the information of the atomic center-of-mass motion. This leads to atom localization even during the flight through the standing-wave field.
