Linewidth narrowing and Purcell enhancement in photonic crystal cavities on an Er-doped silicon nitride platform

Yiyang Gong, Maria Makarova, Selçuk Yerci +9 more

Light emission at 1.54 microm from an Er-doped amorphous silicon nitride layer coupled to photonic crystal resonators at cryogenic and room temperatures and under varying optical pump powers has been studied. The results demonstrate that small mode volume, high quality factor resonators enhance Er absorption and emission rates at the cavity resonance. Time resolved measurements give 11- to 17-fold Purcell enhancement of spontaneous emission at cryogenic temperatures, and 2.4-fold enhancement at room temperature. Resonances exhibit linewidth narrowing with pump power, signifying absorption bleaching and partial inversion of the Er ions cryogenic temperatures. We estimate that 31% of Er ions are excited at the highest pump power.

Room temperature optical coupling of neodymium ions to photonic crystal L3 cavity in gallium nitride semiconductor

Shin Sato, Takao Oto

Abstract We demonstrate the optical coupling of implanted neodymium (Nd) ions in a photonic crystal (PhC)-L3 cavity on GaN at RT. The structure of the PhC-L3 cavity is designed by the electromagnetic field simulation to enhance the 4 F 3/2–4 I 9/2 and 4 F 3/2–4 I 11/2 transitions (916 and 1107 nm) in Nd3+. The highest enhancement ratio of 20-fold is achieved under our measurement conditions by the enhancement of spontaneous emission rate due to the Purcell effect in addition to the improvement of light collection efficiency. These results pave the way for the development of Ln-doped GaN based quantum light–matter interface and nanophotonics.

Scaling laws of the cavity enhancement for nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

Hanno Kaupp, Christian Deutsch, Huan‐Cheng Chang +3 more

We employ a fiber-based optical microcavity with high finesse to study the enhancement of phonon sideband fluorescence of nitrogen-vacancy centers in nanodiamonds. Harnessing the full tunability and open access of the resonator, we explicitly demonstrate the scaling laws of the Purcell enhancement by varying both the mode volume and the quality factor over a large range. While changes in the emission lifetime remain small in the regime of a broadband emitter, we observe an increase of the emission spectral density by up to a factor of 300. This gives a direct measure of the Purcell factor that could be achieved with this resonator and an emitter whose linewidth is narrower than the cavity linewidth. Our results show a method for the realization of wavelength-tunable narrow-band single-photon sources and demonstrate a system that has the potential to reach the strong-coupling regime.
