Direct Observation of the Second-Order Coherence of Parametrically Generated Light

Abstract

The second-harmonic spectrum of the output of an optical parametric emitter at degeneracy exhibits a narrow peak, much sharper than the spectrum of the parametric light. This peak is a manifestation of the second-order correlations in parametric light. Alternatively, it can be considered as resulting from the recombination of simultaneously generated (twin) wave packets. The twin-wave-packet correlation time is shown to be limited by the first-order coherence time of parametric light.

Precision measurements with twin beams of light

Prem Kumar

The generation of twin beams of light from an optical parametric amplifier (OPA) pumped by the second harmonic of a mode-locked and Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser has recently been reported.1 The intensity noises on the direct- detected signal and idler beams at the output of the OPA were observed to be correlated by more than 15 dB, and the subtracted noise fell below the quantum limit by up to 7 dB (80%). With the same OPA it is much harder to generate and detect a highly squeezed beam of light.

Temporally Incoherent Twin Beams of Light

Orhan Aytür, Prem Kumar

Temporally incoherent twin beams of light are generated by means of an optical parametric amplifier that is pumped by the second harmonic of a Q-switched multi-longitudinal-mode Nd:YAG laser. For a parametric gain of 1·12, the intensity noise levels on the direct-detected signal and idler twin beams are found to be correlated by 1·4 dB, whereas the subtracted noise falls below the quantum limit by 0·7 ± 0·1 dB (15%). Although no direct coherence experiment is performed on the twin beams themselves, their temporal incoherence is manifested by the stringent path-length matching requirement between the pump and input signal beams.

Quadratic Coherence in Parametric Emission

Rama K. Raj, Izo I. Abram, J. L. Oudar +1 more

Optical parametric emission produces light in which photons are created in highly correlated pairs. This feature is formalized through the concept of quadratic coherence. We study the correlation between twin photons through a spectral and temporal analysis of the second-harmonic of the parametric light.

Observation of quantum-correlated twin beams in cascaded nonlinear interactions

Salvatore Castrignano, Iolanda Ricciardi, P. Maddaloni +3 more

We report on the generation of twin beams through a cascaded process of optical parametric oscillation in a doubly resonant second-harmonic generation system. These bright beams exhibit strong quantum correlations, enabling the observation of up to 5 dB of noise reduction in their intensity difference below the standard quantum limit.

Generation of narrow-band correlated photon pairs by spontaneous down conversion in a cavity

Латыпов Ильнур Зиннурович, Alexander A. Kalinkin, A. V. Shkalikov +2 more

The problem of generating a narrow-band biphoton field during spontaneous parametric down conversion of light in a quadratic nonlinear medium in a cavity is discussed. It is shown that, in the case of double resonance (for signal and idle fields), the form of the single-photon wave packet is biexponential and has a half-width determined by the photon life time in the cavity. An experiment is carried out on the generation of narrow-band biphotons in a crystal of lithium iodine with I-type matching in a frequency degenerate collinear regime. The second-order correlation function of the cavity-enhanced biphotons is measured using the electric nanosecond time delay line.
