Uncertainty relation between angular momentum and angle variable

Abstract

Certain pitfalls regarding the uncertainty relation between angular momentum and the angle variable have been discussed from a didactical point of view. Further, an uncertainty relation has been derived for these variables in a simple and consistent manner; this relation is valid only for small values of uncertainty in the angle variable.

Angular minimum uncertainty states with large uncertainties

The uncertainty relation for angle and angular momentum has a lower bound which depends on the form of the state. Surprisingly, this lower bound can be very large. We derive the states which have the lowest possible uncertainty product for a given uncertainty in the angle or in the angular momentum. We show that, if the given angle uncertainty is close to its maximum value, the lowest possible uncertainty product tends to infinity.

On the uncertainty relations for angular observables and beyond them

Spiridon Dumitru

For angular observables pairs (angular momentum-angle and number-phase) the adequate reference element of normality is not the Robertson-Schrödinger uncertainty relation but a Schwarz formula regarding the quantum fluctuations. Beyond such a fact the traditional interpretation of the uncertainty relations appears as an unjustified doctrine.

Uncertainty relation between angle and orbital angular momentum: interference effect in electron vortex beams

Sh. Tanimura

The uncertainty relation between angle and orbital angular momentum had not been formulated in a similar form as the uncertainty relation between position and linear momentum because the angle variable is not represented by a quantum mechanical self-adjoint operator.Instead of the angle variable operator, we introduce the complex position operator Ẑ = x + iŷ and interpret the order parameter µ = Ẑ / Ẑ † Ẑ as a measure of certainty of the angle distribution. We prove the relation between the uncertainty of angular momentum and the angle order parameter. We also prove its generalizations and discuss experimental methods for testing these relations.

From the angle of uncertainty relation, the difficulties in quantization of angular variation in quantum mechanics are analyzed.Hence, the contradiction between quantization of angular momentum and current theory of uncertainty relation is found.

Angular performance measure for tighter uncertainty relations

Z. Hradil, Jaroslav Řeháček, A. B. Klimov +2 more

The uncertainty principle places a fundamental limit on the accuracy with which we can measure conjugate quantities. However, the fluctuations of these variables can be assessed in terms of different estimators. We propose an angular performance that allows for tighter uncertainty relations for angle and angular momentum. The differences with previous bounds can be significant for particular states and indeed may be amenable to experimental measurement with the present technology.
