Abstract

Two types of interference were observed using two-photon spontaneous parametric radiation from two nonlinear interaction regions. Two experimental setups analogous to the Young and Mach-Zehnder interferometers were used. An interesting feature of the two-photon Young interference is the opposite conditions for its observation by two different methods: by measuring intensity of light at a single frequency and by measuring correlation of intensities at two conjugated frequencies (method of coincidences). Two-photon Mach-Zehnder interference resembles the Ramsey method of separated fields, which is used in beam spectroscopy. A simple macroscopic quantum model agrees well with the experimental results and enables their interpretation in terms of ``biphotons'' carrying information about the pump phase.

Interference between spontaneous two-photon radiation from two macroscopic regions

A. V. Burlakov, Давид Николаевич Клышко, S. P. Kulik +2 more

Interference is observed between the spontaneous parametric radiation from two nonlinear crystals separated by a macroscopic air gap and excited in series by a common pump beam. The phase of the interference depends on the phase shifts at three frequencies. A simple quantum model agrees well with the experimental results and makes it possible to interpret the effect in terms of general vacuum fluctuations which give rise to the spontaneous emission of mutually coherent radiation from the two crystals.

Two-photon interference in a standard Mach-Zehnder interferometer

Yanhua H. Shih, Alexander V. Sergienko, Morton H. Rubin +2 more

A pair of light quanta with different colors (155.9-nm difference in center wavelength) generated from parametric down-conversion was injected collinearly into one input port of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Coincidence interference behavior was studied over a wide range of optical path differences of the interferometer. A measurement of 75% interference visibility with oscillation of the pump frequency for a large optical path difference of the interferometer (43 cm) is the signature of a quantum two-photon entangled state, which reflects both particle and wave nature of the light quanta in one experiment.

Two-Photon Interference Experiment in a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

Taesoo Kim, Heonoh Kim, Jeong-Hoon Ko +1 more

A two-photon interference experiment is presented in which an entangled pair of photons generated from a parametric down-conversion was incident on two input ports of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The experiment was carried out using two photon coincidence detection with two detectors at the two output ports of the interferometer. The measured coincidence counts exhibit an interference effect with visibility of 0.75 at simultaneous inputs and 0.38 at inputs with different arrival times according to the degree of photon number entanglement.

Temporally Correlated Narrowband Biphoton Interference Based on Mach–Zehnder Interferometer

Da Zhang, Irfan Ahmed, Lin Hao +4 more

Abstract Since early 1990s, Mach–Zehnder interferometer has been used to investigate the interference of biphoton wave packets. Due to subpicosecond time coherence of biphoton generated by spontaneous parametric downconversion process, some physical processes are ignored in the interferometer, most likely the biphoton time‐domain interference. Here, the two‐photon interference phenomenon based on the Mach–Zehnder interferometer is theoretically studied, where the correlated photon pairs are produced by the four‐wave mixing in atomic system. In particular, the quantum interference effect to effectively control the coherent time of two‐photon by adjusting the input delay is used. In the damped Rabi oscillation regime, two‐photon bunching and antibunching effects are observed. In addition, in the group‐delay regime, the interference between biphoton precursor, slow‐light wave packets and also in between the precursor and the slow‐light wave packets is observed, which had never been reported before. These results may have potential applications in the fields of biphoton shaping and quantum information processing.

Two-photon interference of temporally separated photons

Heonoh Kim, Sang Min Lee, Han Seb Moon

We present experimental demonstrations of two-photon interference involving temporally separated photons within two types of interferometers: a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a polarization-based Michelson interferometer. The two-photon states are probabilistically prepared in a symmetrically superposed state within the two interferometer arms by introducing a large time delay between two input photons; this state is composed of two temporally separated photons, which are in two different or the same spatial modes. We then observe two-photon interference fringes involving both the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference effect and the interference of path-entangled two-photon states simultaneously in a single interferometric setup. The observed two-photon interference fringes provide simultaneous observation of the interferometric properties of the single-photon and two-photon wavepackets. The observations can also facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of the origins of the interference phenomena arising from spatially bunched/anti-bunched two-photon states comprised of two temporally separated photons within the interferometer arms.

Simultaneous measurement of HOM-like and N00N-like two-photon wavepackets in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer

We propose and experimentally demonstrate two-photon interference effects in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in which two different kinds of two-photon states are prepared by introducing a time delay between the two input photons. The two-photon states are simultaneously prepared in a symmetrically superposed state with two temporally separated photons in two different spatial modes or in the same spatial mode within the interferometer.
