THERMAL PROPERTIES AND GROUND STATE ENERGY SHIFT OF CHARGED ANYONS

Abstract

We derive the second and third virial coefficients and the ground state energy shift for charged anyons within the Hartree-Fock approximation. A second quantization scheme at finite temperature is introduced for this calculation up to the second order and the vertex is composed of anyonic, point, constant as well as Coulomb interactions. The thermodynamic potential for the second order correlation diagram of Coulomb interaction leads to the logarithmic divergence (V ln V). Hence, we find the heat capacity and the correlation energy of anyons without Coulomb-Coulomb interaction. Finally, we discuss the magnetic-field-induced localization at low filling ν, including the Wigner crystal phase.

Analytic approach to the ground-state energy of charged anyon gases

B. Abdullaev, U. Rößler, M.M. Musakhanov

We derive an approximate analytic formula for the ground-state energy of the charged anyon gas. Our approach is based on the harmonically confined two-dimensional (2D) Coulomb anyon gas and a regularization procedure for vanishing confinement. To take into account the fractional statistics and Coulomb interaction we introduce a function, which depends on both the statistics and density parameters ($\ensuremath{\nu}$ and ${r}_{s}$, respectively). We determine this function by fitting to the ground-state energies of the classical electron crystal at very large ${r}_{s}$ (the 2D Wigner crystal), and to the Hartree-Fock (HF) energy of the spin-polarized 2D electron gas, and the dense 2D Coulomb Bose gas at very small ${r}_{s}$. The latter is calculated by use of the Bogoliubov approximation. Applied to the boson system $(\ensuremath{\nu}=0)$ our results are very close to recent results from Monte Carlo (MC) calculations. For spin-polarized electron systems $(\ensuremath{\nu}=1)$ our comparison leads to a critical judgment concerning the density range, to which the HF approximation and MC simulations apply. In dependence on $\ensuremath{\nu}$, our analytic formula yields ground-state energies, which monotonously increase from the bosonic to the fermionic side if ${r}_{s}>1$. For ${r}_{s}\ensuremath{\leqslant}1$ it shows a nonmonotonous behavior indicating a breakdown of the assumed continuous transformation of bosons into fermions by variation of the parameter $\ensuremath{\nu}$.

Analytic approach to ground state energy of charged anyon gas in strong magnetic field

Bakhodir Abdullaev, U. Rößler, Chul‐Hong Park +1 more

We present analytic formulas for the ground state energy of two-dimensional (2D) anyon gas in strong magnetic field (Landau level filling factor νL ≤ 1). The formulas are obtained by applying harmonic potential regularization for the vanishing confinement to harmonically confined Coulomb anyon gas. In a case of absence of the Coulomb interaction our analytic result provides an exact solution. It contains a contribution of the anyon gauge field characterized by the anyon parameters ν and νL. In a case of presence of the Coulomb interaction we introduce a function depending on the parameters ν, νL and the density parameter rs. The function is determined by fitting the Fano-Ortolani interpolation equation in the fractional quantum Hall effect regime for spin-polarized electrons and by consistence requirement with known results for the ground state energy of the 2D Coulomb Bose gas in strong magnetic field. We show that our formulas are valid not only for fermions (ν=1) but quite generally for anyons (0 ≤ ν ≤ 1).

Single-particle excitation spectrum of the anyon gas

Alexander L. Fetter, Charles B. Hanna

The single-particle energy spectrum of the anyon gas is calculated in the Hartree-Fock approximation, for all fractional statistics corresponding to a ground state with an integral number of filled Landau levels. We also compute the first-order shift in the ground-state energy as a function of the statistics.

HARTREE-FOCK APPROXIMATION FOR COULOMB INTERACTING ANYON GAS IN A MAGNETIC FIELD

Aurora Pérez Martínez, A. CABO

Dyson equations for a Coulomb interacting anyon gas in a magnetic field are obtained and solved in the Hartree-Fock approximation. The states recently proposed by Greiter and Wilczek naturally arise from the Hartree-Fock solution. The electron self energies are calculated in the case when only the lowest Landau level is occupied.

DERIVATION OF LAUGHLIN'S WAVEFUNCTION IN ANYON SYSTEM

Z. F. Ezawa, Aiichi Iwazaki

In a semiclassical approximation we derive the ground-state wavefunction of the system of anyons in an external magnetic field, where anyons are interacting via the Coulomb interaction. The statistical interactions are treated in perturbation around the boson limit. The wavefunction coincides with the Laughlin wavefunction except for small corrections due to the Coulomb interaction. We also calculate the ground-state energy and the excitation spectrum.

Virial expansion coefficients in the harmonic approximation

J. R. Armstrong, Nikolaj Thomas Zinner, D. V. Fedorov +1 more

The virial expansion method is applied within a harmonic approximation to an interacting N-body system of identical fermions. We compute the canonical partition functions for two and three particles to get the two lowest orders in the expansion. The energy spectrum is carefully interpolated to reproduce ground-state properties at low temperature and the noninteracting high-temperature limit of constant virial coefficients. This resembles the smearing of shell effects in finite systems with increasing temperature. Numerical results are discussed for the second and third virial coefficients as functions of dimension, temperature, interaction, and transition temperature between low- and high-energy limits.
