Abstract

Based on the solution of the density matrix of motion equations we gave a theoretical simulation and experimental measurement of reduction of light propagation for a doped Er+ fiber by population oscillation. The effects of the concentration of doped Er ion density and fiber length were given in the paper. The measured data was agree with theoretical simulation well. Maximum delay is 10.75ms. The delay is tunable by changing modulation frequency and laser input power. The result showed the delay based on slow light in fiber can be proposed a novel optical delay line.

Study on the relationship between the population of metastable state and time delay in an erbium-doped optical fiber

Qiu Wei, 高波 Gao Bo, Peng Lin +5 more

The slow light propagation in optical fiber has attracted much attention because of its practical applications. Use of coherent population oscillation to produce slow light propagation has many advantages over other methods. We investigate the reduction of the group velocity propagation by the coherent population oscillation in erbium-doped optical fiber, and also the relationship between the population of metastable state and the time delay by changing the doping concentration, the length of the fiber, the input power, and the pump power. The results show that we can select a high doping concentration of erbium in the fiber, increase the length of the fiber, decrease the pump power and select the appropriate power of the signal light to increases the time delay.

Tunable optical delay with low intensity loss in a cascade structure Er3+-doped optical fiber amplifier

Yuan Gao, Wei Qiu, Yuqi Wu +4 more

In this paper, we propose a new pumping scheme—a dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of Er3+-doped optical fiber based on the theory of coherent population oscillation. While realizing slow light transmission, the loss of output signal light power is reduced. Using numerical simulation, we compare the effects of a single fiber without pumping, a 980 nm single pumping single fiber, and a dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of Er3+-doped optical fiber on signal light intensity loss coefficient τ and maximum time delay with the increase of input signal light power. The results show that the signal light intensity loss coefficient τ of the three structures decreases gradually with the increase of input signal light power. However, the transmission of lower signal light intensity loss coefficient τ=0.0823 and a larger time delay of 0.15 ms can be obtained under the dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of Er3+-doped optical fiber. On the basis of the dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of Er3+-doped optical fiber, the signal light intensity loss coefficient τ decreases gradually with the increase of pump ratio M (M=P1480∶P980) and the decrease of length ratio N (N=L2∶L1; L1 and L2 represent the length of the first and second cascaded optical fibers, respectively). Moreover, we compare the effects of ion density of the Er3+-doped optical fiber on the time delay of three structures. The dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of Er3+-doped optical fiber can provide a larger time delay and smaller signal light intensity loss coefficient τ at low ion density of the Er3+-doped optical fiber.

Research on group velocity slowdown in erbium-doped optical fiber under controllable absorption loss

Qiu Wei, Zhang Yun-Dong, Jianbo Ye +6 more

Group velocity of the optical pulse propagation would be reduced based on coherent population oscillation effect in an absorbing medium. According to the absorption properties of erbium-doped optical fiber, there would appear a sharp absorption loss, which brought more difficulties to the actual measurement of slow light and its application in communications. From the ground rate equation of erbium-ion, the delay of optical pulse was simulated under controllable absorption loss, and experiments were implemented to verify the theoretical results. Moreover, we researched how the different pump power and fiber length effect the signal loss and the optical pulse delay.

Slowdown of Group Velocity of Light Using Coherent Population Oscillation

Qiu Wei, Zhang Yun-Dong, Jianbo Ye +4 more

We investigate the reduction of the group velocity propagation resulting from the steep change of the refractive index by the coherent population oscillation in erbium-doped optical fibre. The largest delay is measured to be about 8.75ms corresponding to a group index of 1.312 × 10 6 . The time delay or advancement depends on the pump intensity. Influences of the ion density on the fractional delay and the group velocity reduction of light propagation are studied. Based on our discussion the optimization parameters should be selected in order to obtain more appropriate time delay and the slowdown of group velocity.

Slowdown of group velocity of light in dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of Er 3+ -doped optical fiber at room temperature

Wei Qiu, Yujing Yang, Yuan Gao +3 more

Abstract Slow light is demonstrated in the cascade structure of an erbium-doped fiber with two forward propagation pumps. The results of the numerical simulation of the time delay and the optimum modulation frequency complement each other. The time delay and the optimum modulation frequency depend on the pump ratio G ( G = P 1480 : P 980 ). The discussion results of this paper show that a larger time delay of slow light propagation can be obtained in the cascade structure of Er 3+ -doped optical fibers with dual-frequency laser pumping. Compared to previous research methods, the dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of an Er 3+ -doped optical fiber is more controllable. Based on our discussion the pump ratio G should be selected in order to obtain a more appropriate time delay and the slowdown of group velocity.
