Unveiling the relationship between optical bistability and vacuum Rabi splitting

Zhaoyang Zhang, Haixia Chen, Lei Zhang +4 more

The relationship between optical bistability (OB) and vacuum Rabi splitting is experimentally demonstrated in an atomic ensemble confined in a three-mirror optical cavity. The vacuum-induced splitting and bright states can effectively affect the bistable behaviour by manipulating multiple parameters such as atomic density and detuning. Also, we observed another kind of “∞”-shape OB by scanning the probe/cavity detuning. The study can make a contribution to better understand the OB and other dynamical behaviours in a composite atom-cavity system.

Bistability and dynamic transient in active fibre-Bragg gratings

Xiaomei Wang

We have demonstrated bistability and dynamic transients as well as the modelling method in active optical fibre gratings with active medium where both non-linear Kerr interaction and chromatic dispersion are considered. The calculated results of the transmitted versus incident powers exhibit optical bistability for the static operation and transient oscillations for the dynamic operation. Higher optical gain causes smaller switching power and stronger bistable behaviour. (6 pages)

Static and Dynamic Optical Bistability in Fabry-Pérot and Distributed Feedback Resonators with Quantum Well structures

F. Castelli, L. A. Lugiato, Gian Paolo Bava +1 more

Recently relevant results on optical bistability in Multiple Quantum Well (MQW) structures at room temperature have been reported [1]. In this paper a rather complete model for optical bistability in Fabry-Pérot (FP) and Distributed Feedback devices (DFB) including a MQW structure is described. It includes the optical dielectric response of the MQW structure, the static output power vs. input power and finally the dynamical behaviour.
