THEORETICAL STUDY OF TRANSMISSION SPECTRUM IN CAVITY-WAVEGUIDE SIDE-COUPLED SYSTEMS

Abstract

Starting with one-cavity side-coupled with waveguide system, we theoretically study on transmission spectrum for a two-cavity side-coupled with waveguide system based on coupled mode theory by using light-tracing method. Interesting effects called all-optical analog to EIT appear in some cases. 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method provides optical modes distributions at different wavelengths, including the EIT-like wavelength. Influences of different parameters on the narrow EIT-like peak such as cavity quality factors Q, frequency difference detuning Δω, and phase difference detuning between cavities ΔΦ are discussed. Compared with previous studies, this method is easier to understand and can be used as a model for both standing cavities like line-defect photonic crystal cavities and whispering gallery modes cavities like microring cavities.

ELECTROMAGNETICALLY INDUCED TRANSPARENCY (EIT)-LIKE TRANSMISSION IN ORTHOGONAL-COUPLED SLOT CAVITIES

Yinghui Guo, Lianshan Yan, Wei Pan +4 more

The transmission characteristics and electromagnetic responses of orthogonal-coupled slot cavities system are investigated with finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Results show the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like transmission can be realized in the proposed structure due to the destructive interference between the horizontal cavity (bright mode) and the vertical cavity (dark mode). Moreover, trapped resonance modes in the horizontal cavity can be selective whether to be induced in vertical cavity or not depending on their relative position. Consequently, EIT-like transmission can be obtained in visible and near-infrared range, simultaneously or individually. The corresponding physical mechanisms are discussed in terms of counter profiles of fields | Hz | and coupled mode theory. Influences of the geometrical parameters on EIT-like transmission are also investigated to generate transparency windows with different shape.

Coupling Whispering-Gallery-Mode Microcavities With Modal Coupling Mechanism

Yun‐Feng Xiao, Bumki Min, Xiaoshun Jiang +2 more

We theoretically describe and study coupling between two whispering-gallery-mode microcavities through a side coupled fiber taper. The two microcavities can couple to each other bidirectionally with only one fiber taper waveguide due to the modal coupling between a pair of whispering-gallery modes traveling in opposite directions. By choosing appropriate physical parameters, some interesting spectra, such as electromagnetically-induced transparency-like coherent transmission and band-like reflection, can be obtained in such a system. Slow light is discussed in this paper as a direct application of the coupled microresonator structure. This structure also has potential application in coupled cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Phase shift multiplication effect of all-optical analog to electromagnetically induced transparency in two micro-cavities side coupled to a waveguide system

Boyun Wang, Tao Wang, Jian Tang +2 more

We propose phase shift multiplication effect of all-optical analog to electromagnetically induced transparency in two photonic crystal micro-cavities side coupled to a waveguide system through external optical pump beams. With dynamically tuning the propagation phase of the line waveguide, the phase shift of the transmission spectrum in two micro-cavities side coupled to a waveguide system is doubled along with the phase shift of the line waveguide. π-phase shift and 2π-phase shift of the transmission spectrum are obtained when the propagation phase of the line waveguide is tuned to 0.5π-phase shift and π-phase shift, respectively. All observed schemes are analyzed rigorously through finite-difference time-domain simulations and the coupled-mode formalism. These results show a new direction to the miniaturization and the low power consumption of microstructure integration photonic devices in optical communication and quantum information processing.

Electromagnetically induced transparency-like effect in a two-bus waveguides coupled microdisk resonator

Qingzhong Huang, Zhan Shu, Ge Song +3 more

We observe theoretically and experimentally electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like effect in a single microdisk resonator (MDR) evanescently coupled with two bus waveguides. This structure is modeled using transfer matrix method, and it is revealed that the EIT-like spectrum originates from the coherent interference between two nearby low-order whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) with comparable quality factors. The EIT-like properties have been investigated analytically with respect to coupling efficiency, round-trip power attenuation, as well as phase spacing between two resonances. The resonance spacing and mode coupling are adjustable by varying the effective indices of WGMs and waveguide mode. Consequently, fully integrated MDRs were fabricated in silicon. Resonant modes and coupling efficiency are studied in one-bus waveguide coupled MDRs. Finally, EIT-like resonance is observed in a two-bus waveguides coupled MDR of 3 μm in radius with a quality factor of 4,200 and central transmission larger than 0.65. The experimental results agree with our modeling well and show good internal consistency, confirming that two WGMs coupled in a point-to-point manner are required for EIT-like effect.

Coupled mode theory analysis of mode-splitting in coupled cavity system

Qiang Li, Tao Wang, Yikai Su +2 more

We analyze transmission characteristics of two coupled identical cavities, of either standing-wave (SW) or traveling-wave (TW) type, based on temporal coupled mode theory.Mode splitting is observed for both directly (cavity-cavity) and indirectly (cavity-waveguide-cavity) coupled cavity systems. The effects of direct and indirect couplings, if coexisting in one system, can offset each other such that no mode splitting occurs and the original single-cavity resonant frequency is retained. By tuning the configuration of the coupled cavity system, one can obtain different characteristics in transmission spectra, including splitting in transmission, zero transmission, Fano-type transmission, electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT)-like transmission, and electromagnetically-induced-absorption (EIA)-like transmission. It is also interesting to notice that a side-coupled SW cavity system performs similarly to an under-coupled TW cavity. The results are useful for the design of cavity-based devices for integration in nanophotonics.

Bistability by Slow Light Photonic Crystal Waveguide

Lei Dai, Chun Jiang

We study theoretically and numerically optical bistability in photonic crystal waveguide-cavity system with cavity holding multipole mode patterns. The elimination of dominant component of the radiation in cavity can reduce dramatically the scattering of light by cavity and can be used to achieve bistability at band edge. Numerical results performed by the finite-difference time-domain method indicate that the switch power can be reduced greatly that can be regarded as the improvement of quality-factor in cavity.
