Abstract

The transmission characteristics and electromagnetic responses of orthogonal-coupled slot cavities system are investigated with finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Results show the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like transmission can be realized in the proposed structure due to the destructive interference between the horizontal cavity (bright mode) and the vertical cavity (dark mode). Moreover, trapped resonance modes in the horizontal cavity can be selective whether to be induced in vertical cavity or not depending on their relative position. Consequently, EIT-like transmission can be obtained in visible and near-infrared range, simultaneously or individually. The corresponding physical mechanisms are discussed in terms of counter profiles of fields | Hz | and coupled mode theory. Influences of the geometrical parameters on EIT-like transmission are also investigated to generate transparency windows with different shape.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency-Like Effect by Dark-Dark Mode Coupling

Qiao Wang, Kaili Kuang, Huixuan Gao +3 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency-like (EIT-like) effect is a promising research area for applications of slow light, sensing and metamaterials. The EIT-like effect is generally formed by the destructive interference of bright-dark mode coupling and bright-bright mode coupling. There are seldom reports about EIT-like effect realized by the coupling of two dark modes. In this paper, we numerically and theoretically demonstrated that the EIT-like effect is achieved through dark-dark mode coupling of two waveguide resonances in a compound nanosystem with metal grating and multilayer structure. If we introduce |1⟩, |2⟩ and |3⟩ to represent the surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) resonance, waveguide resonance in layer 2, and waveguide resonance in layer 4, the destructive interference occurs between two pathways of |0⟩→|1⟩→|2⟩ and |0⟩→|1⟩→|2⟩→|3⟩→|2⟩, where |0⟩ is the ground state without excitation. Our work will stimulate more studies on EIT-like effect with dark-dark mode coupling in other systems.

THEORETICAL STUDY OF TRANSMISSION SPECTRUM IN CAVITY-WAVEGUIDE SIDE-COUPLED SYSTEMS

Chuanbo Dong, Tao Wang, Wei Yan +1 more

Starting with one-cavity side-coupled with waveguide system, we theoretically study on transmission spectrum for a two-cavity side-coupled with waveguide system based on coupled mode theory by using light-tracing method. Interesting effects called all-optical analog to EIT appear in some cases. 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method provides optical modes distributions at different wavelengths, including the EIT-like wavelength. Influences of different parameters on the narrow EIT-like peak such as cavity quality factors Q, frequency difference detuning Δω, and phase difference detuning between cavities ΔΦ are discussed. Compared with previous studies, this method is easier to understand and can be used as a model for both standing cavities like line-defect photonic crystal cavities and whispering gallery modes cavities like microring cavities.

Observation of electromagnetically induced transparency-like transmission in terahertz asymmetric waveguide-cavities systems

Lin Chen, Chunmei Gao, Jiaming Xu +3 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like transmission was demonstrated in terahertz asymmetric parallel plate waveguides with two identical cavities. By shifting the position of the bottom cavity from the symmetric position in the propagation direction, both the phases of the propagating wave at resonances and the coupling strengths between two cavities are changed, resulting in exciting the additional asymmetric resonance and manipulating the detuning of two different resonant frequencies. The transparent peak between two resonances comes from the cancelation of symmetric and asymmetric resonances. We also use the physical picture of excitation of quasi-dark mode to explain this EIT-like transmission, which is similar to the metamaterial systems.

Investigation of the characteristics of the dual-band electromagnetic induction transparent-like terahertz spectrum in a grating-like structure

Chao Zhao, Jiahao Hu

Abstract In this paper, a new structure is proposed which is expected to realize a dual-band electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like effect in the terahertz spectrum. It can be regarded as a metamaterial of grating-like elements composed of dual-band U-shaped resonators. The near-field coupling between bright modes can produce an EIT-like effect. After optimizing the parameters, our numerical simulated results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The EIT-like effect can significantly reduce the group speed near the transparent window, and may gain more significant potential applications in slow-light transmission and optical storage.

Complete transparency with three active-passive-coupled optical resonators

Xiao-Bo Yan, Liu Yang, Bing He

The phenomena of induced transparency, with the typical examples of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in atomic media and those based on coupled optical resonators, have attracted tremendous interest since their discoveries. Owing to the limitations of the involved physical elements, however, near-100\% transmissions were reported under highly demanding experimental conditions. With a structure of three linearly coupled optical resonators, an active one carrying optical gain and two passive ones simply with dissipation, we demonstrate that a transmitted light field can become completely transparent through the structure, which displays all properties similar to those of EIT. It is due to a destructive interference mechanism that totally eliminates the intracavity field in the dissipative resonator directly coupled to the transmitted field of any feasible power, when the coupling strength of two other resonators is tuned across a point determined by their associated gain and loss rates. This mechanism works for all possible coupling strengths of the dark resonator with the input field and its neighboring resonator, as well as for any available quality factor from its fabrication. The transparency window size and output field intensity can be freely adjusted by tuning two inter-cavity couplings of wide ranges, without modifying the built-in optical gain which can be just slightly stronger than the dissipation of the active resonator.

Investigation of the characteristics of the electromagnetic induction transparent-like spectrum with counter-propagating waves coupling mechanism for waveguide and micro-ring coupled system

Chao Zhao

In this paper, a new counter-propagation waves coupling mechanism is proposed which is expected to realize an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like effect. Comparing the travelling waves coupling mechanism (see J. Mod. Opt. 2015,62:313-320 [9]) with the counter-propagating waves coupling mechanism, we find out that the transparency window breadths of transmission spectra are greatly enhanced and the corresponding phase shift spectra possess a flat profile or a square profile. Our numerical simulated results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The EIT-like effect can significantly reduce the group velocity near the edge of the square profile transparent window. We believe that the counter-propagating waves coupling mechanism is particularly beneficial for the realization of active manipulation of slow light devices (such as delay lines) required in the conventional EIT scheme. In the vicinity of the transparency peak, we can obtain a large group delay, may gain more significant potential applications in slow-light transmission and optical storage.
