Coupling Whispering-Gallery-Mode Microcavities With Modal Coupling Mechanism

Abstract

We theoretically describe and study coupling between two whispering-gallery-mode microcavities through a side coupled fiber taper. The two microcavities can couple to each other bidirectionally with only one fiber taper waveguide due to the modal coupling between a pair of whispering-gallery modes traveling in opposite directions. By choosing appropriate physical parameters, some interesting spectra, such as electromagnetically-induced transparency-like coherent transmission and band-like reflection, can be obtained in such a system. Slow light is discussed in this paper as a direct application of the coupled microresonator structure. This structure also has potential application in coupled cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Induced transparency and absorption in coupled whispering-gallery microresonators

Ahmer Naweed, George Farca, Siyka I. Shopova +1 more

Optical behavior analogous to electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption is observed in experiments using coupled fused-silica microspheres. This behavior results from interference between coresonant whispering-gallery modes of the two spheres. Coupled-resonator-induced transparency and absorption are observed. Which effect is seen depends on the strength of coupling of incident light from a tapered fiber into the first sphere and on the strength of coupling between the two spheres. The observed effects can enhance microresonator performance in various applications.

Transition between coupled-resonator-induced transparency and absorption

Shuting Guo, Yuhong Zhang, Liu-Le Wu +2 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption in atomic systems have applications such as slow-light generation. Coupled-resonator-induced transparency (CRIT) and absorption (CRIA) are the optical analogy to them. Here we theoretically and experimentally study CRIT and CRIA in two directly coupled whispering-gallery-mode microresonators. The theoretical results give conditions for observing CRIT and CRIA, and predict that a transition between them will happen if we change the coupling strength between the two microresonators or the coupling strength between the fiber taper and the first microresonator. The experimental results demonstrate the transitions between CRIT and CRIA using a microsphere coupled to a sausagelike microresonator. The obtained results give some guidelines to observe CRIT and CRIA.

Modified transmission spectrum induced by two-mode interference in a single silica microsphere

Chun‐Hua Dong, Chang‐Ling Zou, Yun‐Feng Xiao +3 more

We theoretically and experimentally study the resonant transmission spectrum of light in a fibre taper coupled with a single silica microsphere cavity system, where two whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) are simultaneously excited. By changing the taper position (correspondingly, tuning the resonant frequencies of the two WGMs and modulating their coupling conditions with the fibre taper), a sharp electromagnetically-induced- transparency-like window can be observed in the transmission spectrum. This line shape origins from the taper-mediated interference between two co-existing WGMs in a single microsphere. This measurement result agrees well with the theoretical analysis.

Phase-controlled dual-wavelength resonance in a self-coupling whispering-gallery-mode microcavity

Ranran Xie, Guo‐Qing Qin, Hao Zhang +4 more

We report a novel, to the best of our knowledge, way to achieve phase-controlled dual-wavelength resonance based on whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities experimentally. With the help of a feedback waveguide, not only two optical pathways but also a unidirectional coupling between counter-propagating waves are formed, which is the requirement of all-optical analogues of electromagnetically induced transparency and Autler-Townes splitting. By adjusting the accumulating phase introduced from the fiber waveguide, we observe the signal lineshape changes from symmetric to asymmetric, i.e., the resonant transmission and extinction ratio of two splitting modes can be controlled, which brings a new degree of freedom to the WGM resonator system. These results may boost the development of quantum state control and pave the way for reconfiguring devices such as narrow-band filters.
