Abstract

Constants of quenching of the CdII ion Beutler levels by argon were experimentally determined. Excited cadmium ions in the 5s 2 2 D 5/2, 3/2 states were produced by sputtering metal cadmium with alpha-particles at a temperature of 240°C. The quenching constants for the 5s 2 2 D 5/2 and 5s 2 2 D 3/2 CdII ion levels were found to be 1.3×10−10 and 1.8×10−10 cm3 s−1, respectively.

Mechanism of lasing at the 5s2 2D5/2— 5p2P3/2transition in Cd II at anomalously low temperatures of the active medium

A. V. Karelin

The mechanism of lasing at the Cd II atomic ion transition at 441.6 nm at near-threshold temperatures, when the contribution from the sputtering of a pure metallic cadmium film by charged products of nuclear reaction cannot be neglected, is discussed. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental data leads to a value 10.8 atoms per event for the total average yield of sputtering of cadmium by the products of nuclear reaction 3 He(n, p) 3 T.

Alignment of Cd atoms by photoionization

C. Denise Caldwell, Richard N. Zare

The $^{2}D_{\frac{3}{2}}$ and $^{2}D_{\frac{5}{2}}$ excited states of the cadmium ion are produced through photoionization of cadmium atoms by a beam of Hei 584-\AA{} radiation. The presence of alignment in the ions is detected by measuring the degree of linear polarization $P$ of the resulting emission. It is found that $P(^{2}D_{\frac{5}{2}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}})=\ensuremath{-}0.052\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.005$ for the 4416-\AA{} transition, and $P(^{2}D_{\frac{3}{2}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}^{2}P_{\frac{3}{2}})=+0.12\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04$ for the 3536-\AA{} transition, demonstrating that both $^{2}D$ fine-structure components are aligned. A simple calculation is presented which ignores anisotropic final-state interactions. This calculation correctly predicts the sign of the degree of polarization, but fails to reproduce the experimental results.

Measured lifetimes in cadmium using the electron-phonon delayed coincidence technique

D Cvejanović, A Adams, GEORGE C. KING

The electron-photon delayed coincidence technique has been extended to the measurement of the lifetimes of excited states of metals which require an oven to produce an atomic beam of sufficient intensity. Cadmium has been studied and the determination of the lifetimes of three neutral states is reported. These states, together with their measured lifetimes, are as follows: 6 1 S (29.0+or-0.5) ns, 7 1 S (60.8+or-2.6) ns and 5 1 D (22.28+or-0.33) ns.

En utilisant des lampes à vapeur de cadmium très brillantes, on a pu exciter par échelons des atomes de cadmium dans le niveau (5s 5d) 1D 2 et mesurer par effet Hanle la durée de vie radiative de l'état 5 1D2. On obtient τ(5 1D2) = (2,09 ± 0,08) 10-8 s.

Collisional quenching and j -mixing rate constants for the 3D levels of Ca+

Martina Knoop, M. Vedel, F. Vedel

Collisional relaxation and fine-structure mixing rate constants have been measured for the metastable $D$ doublet ${(3D}_{3/2},$ ${3D}_{5/2})$ of ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{+}$ ions in the presence of different neutral gases completing a previous work. Experimental results are given for He, Ne, Ar, ${\mathrm{H}}_{2},$ ${\mathrm{N}}_{2},$ and ${\mathrm{CH}}_{4}.$ These data have been obtained with a cloud of approximately ${10}^{5}$ ${\mathrm{Ca}}^{+}$ ions stored in a Paul trap at kinetic energies of around 1 eV. The investigated levels were populated by direct excitation of the corresponding $4S\ensuremath{-}3D$ transitions. The involved time constants were determined from the temporal evolution of the fluorescence of one of the resonance transitions, following the optical pumping of the $P$ level from the $D$ component. Comparison of our data with other similar experimental and theoretical work is finally presented.
